While at the BMW dealer getting my mom's 745iL serviced I was eyeing a black M5 08' with 5k on it.

Sticker, 101k.

The salesman just said "hey do you wana take that out while we're working on your mom's car?"

What the hell do you say? "uhhh sure.."

It was infact the worst transmission I have EVER driven. It is a 7-speed Manual but with an electronic clutch. So its like...an automatic stick...Getting out of the hole gently the clutch system chatters and is very slow to react. The slower you try to leave the line the more it would surge. Then normal driving it would shift at 4000-4500rpm at part and I mean JUST A PART of throttle. Durring the shift it would drive like a grandma, it pushes in the electric clutch for wayy to long, (this was with the speed set at full for shifting).

However once I got it onto the freeway the V10 was very spirited. I then pushed the little "power" button that makes it go from 400 to 500hp and turned off all the 10 million systems. From a 20mph roll it hooks and took off like a rocket. I was at 145 before I knew it... It was DAMN FAST...when it was in gear.

Full throttle it even shifted like ass too. Its like taking a 10 second car and spending 2 seconds between shifts.

Handling was bad ass too. The tranny was just ****!!

My advise...if the new M5 is your hero, don't meet it you'll be very disapointed. Apparently the M3's have the same tranny from what the tech told me.

When I got back in the MM to follow my mom back home it felt good to have my old fashion slushbox. However I felt like I was driving a yacht.

+1 on the MM feeling like a yacht after a real "sports" car....

Yeha I was really weary about the electronic clutch.... Never thought it would react like my left foot can. Guess my suspicions were right.....

Left foot FTW!

Hold on...was the guy in the car with you going 145?

WOW this was my 2001 post...my 2000 was a salute to Ms. D

Yup...

He said that they arn't allowed to turn off the systems or turn on the power button but I know the salesman from some of the auto-x events I've driven at so he knew I wouldn't kill him and the car. My wife was in the back seat enjoying the ride.

This just makes me love the E39 M5's more...

For that amount of money I would take a serious look at a Dodge Viper :burnout:

a good driver can get a Z06 into the 10's w/o mods.

The M5 would have been much better if you push the button to get the tranny to shift harder. It looks like a bar chart and you will need it in the 5th or 7th position. Traction control off and shift it manually too.

My dad has an M6 and I have to push like 5 buttons to get it into fun mode and even then, you will have to know the car.

It's a blast when you get the hang of it!

It was on the 6th setting (highest) And all of the big brother controls were off.

It was the worst transmission in a car I have EVER drove.

LOL. Yea, that's ZR1 territory, not Z06. Sorry, but I'll still take an M5 anyday. Listen to this biatch!

I do transmission engineering for a living, and all OEMs have this same challenge of balancing competing attributes. In this case, you are talking about the competing attributes of Shift Duration and NVH (that chattering you mentioned).

It is sad, though, that in a car that expensive, they still have to "band-aid" the shift duration to make NVH acceptable.

Remember: An open torque converter covers a multitude of sins!

There was a guy from the awe-inspiring/almost fake sounding LS1Tech magazine that did a 10.98 in a factory showroom stock 2008 ZO6.

These guys always seem to get and LSx powered car down the 1/4 in about .3 - .5 faster than anyone in the real world.

They must use a track that has a 10deg downgrade or something! LOL

I understand from the grousing in the automotive magazines that the I-Drive wizardry is a total nightmare. I've never driven or been in one, but wouldn't pass on the opportunity. Even with the transmission and I-Drive weirdness, the thing must be a hoot!

I kinda like the BMW Alpina B7 for $117K

BMW Alpina B7
V8, Supercharged 4.4 Liter, 500 HP RWD
MSRP $117,075
12.8 @ 110.9 MPH
Curb Weight 4,703 pounds

The BMW Alpina B7 is reviewed on page 164, MotorTrend October 2007 issue.

AND, they are rare and only come in "Alpine Blue"

BMW has tapped respected performance tuner Alpina to create a high-powered version of its 7-Series full-size sedan. Only about 200 of these special cars, called the BMW Alpina B7, are planned for sale in the U.S.

Alpina reworked BMW’s 4.4-liter, V8 engine with a supercharger to boost power and mated it to a six-speed automatic transmission featuring steering wheel mounted shift controls for manual gear selection. The engine produces 500 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 516 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,250 rpm for a 0-60 mph sprint in 4.8 seconds.

I could see a new Z06 dipping into the 10's stock. It would take the perfect air on a great track with an acceptable driver, but could be done. I was at a track rental and a friend with an '08 Vette with an a/t, only cold air induction on the car, pulled off an 11.89. Couldn't believe that a stock auto ran that well, but they aren't cheap, so it isn't outrageous to think it happening. But I would rather have the 07 GT500 another friend just picked up from someone in Atlanta about to get it repossessed. White with blue stripes, 362 miles on the odometer, paid what the guy owed on the car....$32,000! The car is immaculate. I never seem to have the money on hand when a deal of this caliber comes along.

A client of mine has a B7 and its white. He also mentioned passing on a black one when he saw my Marauder.

Couple weeks ago, I met a guy with a newer m5 with the AC Schnitzer package called the ACS5, and that thing was absolutely nuts. Sounded like a lambo on steroids when at high revs, and had a sweet purr at idle. By far the nicest beamer I have ever seen first hand.
