View Full Version : LincMercLover's blacked out rims
I noticed that your rims are somewhat blacked out. One pic shows them to be all blacked out and the other shows the center and edge of the rim to be lighter. I like the blacked out idea. What was the procedure?

Just so you know, you are looking at a picture of Barry's (Cruztaker) car not LML.

The pic was probably taken by LML.

LML took the oic you saw. I had the wheels powder coated the day before Ennis and have not had time to take nor post pics. I had hoped that one of the several people who took pics would post them. I will wait for the rain to go bye-bye and post pics this weekend.

Damnnnn Bunny! Nice photo!
I think I will cut and paste it into my personal gallery. Thanks!
To answer quickly:
I went to my local wheel refinishing/repairing company that services the dealers in my area. I paid to have the wheels powder coated. There was an additional fee to have the ENTIRE wheel done inside out. There was also an additional fee to have the outer rim edge polished. Total cost per wheel was $275.
I am pleased, and I like the new attention in having something different.

I love this look, and I said so in Maraudeville. Barry, I will be in touch with you on this. This is how I want my Marauder to be seen by the spectators...

Geo,
You're right that there are two different versions. Cruztaker has the ones with the polished lip. Mine are totally black. More pics are posted somewhere, search for "powdercoated wheels". I believe I like the polished lip better, thanks for the instructions on how it was done, Cruz. I might get mine done that way too. Or maybe I'll swap back to my polished rims. Or maybe I need to get another set and do them like yours so I can have three different looks for the car. I'm so confused.

What did you use to paint the calipers on the MM? Nice looking...how is the color holding up?

The 'lifetime' caliper painting product from Eastwood Co.
Besides me dinging two spots while changing wheels, this stuff is hard as nails, and washes up easily.

Barry,
email me at bsipe@utk.edu with your contact info. It'll be nice to get more details on stripping the powdercoating off the lips and polishing them. One possible problem is I used the unpolished spares instead of the original polished rims so there may be more work involved in getting them smooth and polished.

There is a set of wheels for sale in the Parts for Sale link on this site. They only have 2000 miles on them. They will be great for having two sets. He will ship anywhere.

Those pics were actually taken by MI2QWK4U, I just helped him get those up in the gallery.
And no, neither of those are my rims, but damn do I wish! CRUZTAKER knows I'd trade him rims anyday. I'd even tint his headlights or somethin' for 'em!

How long does it take that caliper paint to dry? Can you drive the car same day you paint?

Sam:
The two part epoxy paints set up in about 2 hours and you will be able to put your wheels back on after that. However, the instructions say not to drive the car for 24 hours to allow the paint to fully harden and cure. A pain in the neck for sure, but that's what I did and the paint is holding up nicely.
The spray paints may be different. I personally do not think they will be as durable or give as nice a finish.

This project requires special planning over several days.
I put the car on jack stands on a friday afterwork. I needed 6 cans of brake cleaner and a couple of small steel detail brushes. (cleaning is easy on new calipers such as ours)
The brake cleaner will remove the existing black paint on our drums and rotors. A can of VHT black caliper paint is handy to repaint them. A template of cardboard simplifies this restoration. You may opt to skip this step if you are carefull with the brake cleaner. I used a fan to dry each caliper after cleaning. Let sit overnite. On sat. a.m. I prepared the Eastwood product, and had several various sized artist brushes on hand (not included in the kit). Once the paint is mixed you have 3 to 5 hours before it is rendered useless and hardens in the can. This is weather dependent. I did mine in the early spring when it was humid and 62 degrees and the paint lasted 6 hours. I did my wifes in the summer and the paint failed in under 3.
Shoot for a minimum of 2 coats on each caliper. Work fast, but neat, no need to mask anything. Cake it on as well. I got 4 coats on the MM in 6 hours. Let the paint cure overnite. On sun a.m. I put the wheels back on, and drove the car monday.
Eastwood has this kit on sale as we speak for about $39, and has many colors including gold this year.

Personnally-And no one aske my opinion--your right--but--
The rims of the MM set aside( established) it's uniquet indefference from all others at it's time of presentation and others that hadn't even considered taking such a plunge--now a days --you seem to find copy cats everytwhere---so it goes --the MM has exrtablished the "STANDARD"

darn keys==wasn't finished-
So --I disagree... Making the crome rims "black" will not enhance this car for higher recognition IMOP--but rather take in down the road of the "others"...I say leave it OEM Crome and highlight other parts..after all--what first got those questions from others--what drew their attention to your car---we've all seen others with darken wheels and --so what---but it was the MM wheels rims that drew others to you when you stopped and parked her..
Oh well--off my stand here--as I said --no one asked--but my feeling is obvious--leave the MM as is--
and for those who have or do changed them===see if the initial look and questions keep coming as they still do with mine ----each and every day I take her out--- well....my thoughts...--thats what makes this such a wonderful site..Thanks folks....Tom

One thing about the MM, it brings out the creativity in all of us. I say do whatever floats your boat. I myself perfer the "Bling-Bling" the stock wheels give off.
