How old should "new tires" be when you install them? What is the shelf life of tires? Newer is always better, but at what age do they become questionable to use in a high performance car?

Here's a post from August 2008 on tire shelf life .... replace at 6 years from date of manufacture is recommended but there is not universal agreement on this. Date is shown as a 4-digit code at the end of the DOT coding. Some manufacturers put it on the outside of the tire .... others like BFG put it on the inside. The number like "4306" means that the tires were manufactured on the 43rd week of 2006.
