I`m wondering how hard is it to get that "Smoker`s smell" out of the interior?I checked out a car for a friend yesterday and the inside just reeked of smoke and cheap cleaning smell.

Paul, if the PO ever smoked with the heater or A/C on, then that smell will have permeated EVERYTHING. It will be in, under, over and on every surface. Even a good detailing won't get rid of it entirely, but that's the first place to start.
The only other thing I've heard about (no guarantee it works) is to leave a pie-plate full of fresh ground coffee in the car. You can try the Arm & Hammer baking soda boxes made for refrigerators, too.
This may take awhile...

Its easier if you smoke with the window open. :D Actually, when I quit last year the smell went away after a few months, but I also never smoke in a closed car. I have no idea how someone could. Some folks are so sensitive to the smell that you can probably never get it out.

If it has a leather interior and they were a heavy smoker...I think it is a done deal.
No matter how much cleaning you do...the first hot sunny day will release more tar & nicotine odors.
The headliner/foam should be replaced as well.

That is a good point about the leather. A citrus based cleaner should work well. I used it on my ZX3 before selling it.

This car has low miles for a good price but I don`t think it`s been taken care of very good by it`s owners(3) Carfax history checks out good but really needs some TLC.

I use febreeze spay and a real good cleaning of anything and everything like carpet, seats, headliner and most importantly the ash tray!!! I also threw a bunch of dryer sheets in my trucks too which helps a lot especially when the inside gets hot in the sun. But the smell never fully leaves, it will always be there in the heater box. I have gone through this in my last 3 trucks.

You may never be able to eliminate the problem totally. I do smoke; but made the decision not to do it in the Marauder on the day I bought it. So far, so good after 65 months. :D
I have seen this written up on another forum somewhere. If I find it again, I'll post it up.

You'll never get rid of the smell completely. Carpet & headliner will need to be replaced. Seats will possibly lose the smell with enough cleaning, unless the smell has gotten into the foam. Every time the heater or air conditioner is turned on you'll smell smoke because the inside of the ducts, heater core, and a/c system are coated. I'd just move on and find another one.

Check for Oil change receipts and you might want to do a compression check as well as listen for the valve 'tick' issue.
BTW: Anyone know how long it takes to complete an oil analysis?

I've seen comparable Marauders on eBay for around that price.
Add up all that would have to be done to remove the oder, if even possible, and all the other TLC needed and I doubt that Marauder is still such a deal.

BTW: Anyone know how long it takes to complete an oil analysis?Last one I did took 2 minutes. I pulled the dip stick and looked. It's sounds simple but the simple stuff is often overlooked and may save you the effort of going further with the purchase. If you see sparkles in the oil, you either bumped your head on the hood or there's metal in the oil and time to keep looking.
A more detailed analysis to determine Parts Per Million (PPM) of wear metals takes about 10 minutes from computer/analyzer set up to reading the analysis report. About a week on each end for shipping/processing. If you want a viscosity test, depending on the lab, add about 30 minutes. That won't help tremendously but would give you an indication of how long between the last oil change. PPM is enough.

"Clean living" will certainly steer the car's smell in the right direction. Did that same thing with my current apartment....NEVER thought the smell would come out. At the time I didn't know what I was thinking...was like getting a stinker hotel room...
My place smells better now that it is not smoked in and I cleaned every inch of it....
Same concept will work with a stinky car. Clean it up and don't smoke in it will somewhat turn things around.
A trick I've seen in detailing is to toss an Air Ionizer in the car, close it up and let that baby run overnight (sometimes for a day or two).
It's not the total solution, but goes a long way towards fixing things short of tearing the interior apart. You will still get a whiff on the hottest/stickiest of days if she's in real bad shape....

The wife's MM smelled cigarette smokey when the a/c was used initally. Thankfully it eventually went away, as it did affect her asthma. Now that it's been a year, I don't notice it at all, even when the car ahs been closed up for a week.
If it had been gag-a-maggot stinky when we looked at it, we would have passed on the purchase.

I haven't bothered to read all the replies, so apologies if this repeats.
1) Got to FLAPS and get a big can of OZIUM - Blue.
2) Put AC on high/recirc
3) Spray OZIUM under passenger dash generaously until the fog comes out the vents.
4) Change from MAX (recirc) to pulling outside air.
5) Spray ozium generously into the cowling vent in front of windshield
switch to heat and repeat 1-5
6) spray headliner and carpets
7) Close up car and park in the sun so it gets hot
8) Take a drive with windows down and AC on full
I have done this time and time again. It works. Every once in a while it takes two treatments.

Ozone generators are the way to go...most good detail shops have them and your car will actually never have the aroma if you treat it for the appropriate time. Magin-has the method I would also use just BEFORE taking it to a detail shop and having it ozone cleaned. Of course I clean my car myself before the detailer gets it too...

Same here.
Former owner of the Bluesmobile was a smoker, I've tried all kinds of cleaners and sprays, they help for a while but on hot summer days, or when I run the heater on high there's still a trace of smoke odor.

It is difficult to remove smoke but not impossible. If you cannot do this yourself then hire someone. I detailed autos professionally for years and found a Thermax Steam Cleaner (there are other brands but that is mine) and a handheld wand can be used on the headliner which is the area of greatest damage. Use the same wand to clean all carpeted and fabric area's. Do this only on a dry day and leave all doors and windows open to dry area's. A Thermax will leave very little mosture anyway but even a bit is a invite to mold.
The leather is easier. Odors will plant themselves on leather but rarely penetrate. A really good leather cleaner, followed by a leather conditioner. I used Lexol.
Clean down all vinyl surfaces with a decent cleaner (not Lexol). I tended to use Murphy's Oil Soap on vinyl (and can be used on Leather) to clean as it is safe on most surfaces, does a good job and leaves a decent finish...NOT shiny.
Keep a couple of things in mind. Color test any surface and remember that a light Flint Leather that has taken on a Patina will lose it with the Lexol.
You have to clean all surfaces..not just the ones over or under the smoker. It is a pain in the butt. Be careful of odors that mask odor. Keep out the pine tree hanging from the mirror. Clean leather has it own aroma.
Keep this in mind also..and smokers, this is not an attack on you, smoking in a car is one of the most damaging things you can do to the car and to the resale value. <climbs down from soap box>

I got this tip from an old-time used car dealer: He told me that any time he got a car in with a bad odor (and he had things far more gross than cigarette smoke) he would take a bag of apples, cut them in quarters and strew them about the interior of the car, roll up the windows, lock the doors and leave it over the weekend. He claimed this would leave the car smelling good as new. Never had to try it myself, but if it doesn't work you're only out the price of a bag of apples.

Babbage mentioned earlier about using an ozone generator. We used to do this at the car lot I used to work at and it really works quite well, so +1 on that suggestion from me. Most detail shops should be able to do this for you.
Have to come clean, I'm a smoker, but I don't smoke in any of my vehicles. It's too hard to sell 'em these days if you do, and too easy to drop an ash on the seat!!

Apples sounds like a great idea ;). They won't leak, as they dehydrate and dry up slowly.
