View Full Version : JLT vs. K & N CAI

There have probably been posts about this before, but I was wondering what the prevailing opinions were about cold air intakes, specifically comparing the JLT system with the K & N product.

Thanks, guys

As a person who has asked the question before. It seems that they are about the same. I have decided to buy the JLT intake, that maybe only be because they are a vendor and I can get it from them in blue. Most people have the K&N, but seems to be the same... I don't really know anything though, just serviving off the kindness of the other members :bows:

JLT = 10-14 HP Gain (according to JLT)
K&N = 17HP Gain (according to K&N)

I'm leaning towards K&N as the pipe has a smooth run out from the roughly 3" MAF adapter to the twin intake setup.

JLT has a "HUGE 4 inch" pipe but it goes in and out all over which makes it much more turbulent than the K&N.

This was my initial 10 minute thought process. The quality of the K&N seems better with the tight silicone seals etc too.

I'm getting the K&N.

I bought mine used from a member here on the .Net a couple of years back. The decal on the heat shield came from a guy on e-Bay.

Don't recall the exact price, but I know it was less than $200.

Most of the "performance " is SOP.....

Disconnect the battery for 10 or 15 minutes to clear the computer.

Because you went with K&N. I dont like K&N your check engine light may come on and obviously not noticible performance when me and sissysurfer put mine on and i pulled out of his driveway I blipped the throttle and smoked um left rocks flying everywhere. Ok that makes NO sense. The CEL comes on because it's running too lean (too much AIR) You need a tune to properly use it. *Or* disnconnect the Neg battery terminal and let the computer re-learn fuel trims etc..

No CEL with JLT = not as much AIR....

JLT design is more turbulent. (in and out all over the place)

JLT = 10-14 HP
K&N = 17 HP

If the hood doesn't close that well with the K&N that's GOOD as you are getting a TIGHT seal (no hot air)

Side note: I heard that the K&N kit is being discontinued. So hurry if you decide to buy one of those.

This sounds reasonable. What I don't get is: if more air flows past the MAF sensor, doesn't it get measured all the same? Shouldn't the computer adjust fuel flow based on the air measurements?

Are there any sensors attached to the stock airbox? Do they need to be transfered to the new CAI?

It should and does get measured the same. Problem is the computer is seeing values outside it's normal 'learned' range. And is hesitant to add more fuel -- then you get a CEL -- read the code and it's almost always something about 'system too lean'

This is why it's important to disconnect the negative terminal for 10-15 minutes which totally drains the computer and all of it's old 'learned' values when you install a CAI kit be it K&N or JLT.

Cut about 3" inches off of your (IAC) hose it should have a nice 45 degree bend to it -- yours is closer to 90 degrees and you can see the hose is crimped at the bend. TRIM THAT! :)

K&N has a totally smooth tapered bore with no edges.

Picture both tubes to be HUGE and you were trying to move a herd of cattle (air) through them what would happen?
