View Full Version : This is the last time I will ask this question... rear ends!

I used the search and cannot find much on posi's. I was going to get a Detroit Locker, but I was told I do not need to spend that much money and I could get something by a "Cobra" name??? Does anyone know what this is?

I need a new posi again, but I guess I do not need a locker.

Again I used the search, but nothing helped me.

Detroit Locker has + & - tradeoffs. They are noisy, sometimes they will clunk and cause an uneasy shift in the rear of the car when cornering. But it won't break, and it has no clutches to wear out. You won't have to work on the rear end any more. It's somewhat expensive.

I've heard that the factory rebuild using Cobra parts (clutches ?) works pretty good. But it still has clutches and they WILL wear out. They may last longer than the stock parts but they will still eventually wear out.

Most people say to stay away from the Auburn. The only experience I have with them is the ECTED electric locker. I'm pretty happy with it and it hasn't been worked on since I put it in my car. With it turned off, it is a limited slip and I've never noticed a problem with peg-legging burnouts. With it turned on it becomes a spool (actually a semi-spool) and it locks both rear axles together. I say semi-spool because if it is engaged and you go around corners it makes the most God-awful clunking noises you could imagine and it sounds like you've broken something. It's essentially working like a Detroit locker does instead of a spool. A true spool will either cause one wheel to squall on corners or it will break an axle.

A spool is not recommended for the street.

Some people swear by the Eaton limited slip. I have no experience with them, so I can't say.

Another option is the Detroit True-trac. I believe it is an upgrade to the factory limited slip center section. If I didn't have my current setup I would be tempted to try one of these.

The Torsen type rear differential links the axles through mechanical gears instead of clutches similar to the Detroit locker. It is supposedly quieter and better for cornering. A lot of road racers use it. I don't think it is as heavy duty as some others and I don't think it is highly regarded for drag racing.

This is exactly what I have going on right now.

The guy that installed it said that awful noise I hear is the posi working. I have done a few hard take offs and it still lights up both rears.

When I take it to Zack he says something is seriously wrong with the rear end and I do not like the noise either.

If it is making a noise like you describe, that is the way it should be acting?

Do I even need a new rear end? Is there a way just to shut it up? Should I simply take it to a rear end shop and see if they notice anything wrong?

I am really confused.

So far you are the only one other than the guy who installed this, that said that horrible noise is the posi working correctly.

NOTICE: It only does this when I have the stearing wheel turned. It used to be when parking, but even when it's a lane change in rush hour traffic I can clearly hear that rear end.

No, I didn't say it was working normally. If you had an electric posi and it was doing that only when it was switched on, then I might say it was working normally.

If it is a standard limited slop and it is making those noises, I suspect your spider gears are shot. I've been there, had to replace the whole diff unit because the bad spiders had damaged other parts.

Yup, that sounds closer to the problem on hand.

Alright here we go again.

What else is there besides a Detroit Locker? I'm not trying to be sarcastic at you Brian, I'm just sick of this thing going soft on me.

Dom, I am very happy with the Detroit True-Trac in my Marauder. I'll take you for a ride in it when you're here later this month.

What did that run you?

Also I need this done before KY... it's that bad.

The True-Trac was installed by my Marauder's prior owner. I believe there was a group by for FIT owners.

I got a nice 28 spline Ford Trac-Lok from Dennis Reinhart that was rebuilt with the carbon fiber clutches. I'd recommend getting that. Depending on mileage a new ring and pinon may be in order $175 as well as a new master bearing kit. If there is any metal in your rearend everything should be suspect for replacement.

Other than that I always liked the looks of the Torsen T2-R differential. They are about $600 last time I looked. Bonus: It shouldn't ever wear out.

I have the Eaton right now, got it on the GB that Gregg at FIT ran when he was here.
I like it and it works well now, better than the stocker that became a one legger, but I'll need an upgrade by years end.

Powertrax, or Powertrax Lock-Right.
Its a Detroit Locker without the noise.
Ring gear carrier does not have to be removed to install this item.
