All I play is burned cd's in mine. Use a good quality disc though, some of the cheap ones get a bit finicky.

Cool, just to make sure I'm hearing you correctly --- I put 234 mp3 files on a single CD.
Then if I put that in a stock 300a stereo it'll play it??

Not a chance. It will play a burned audio CD, not an MP3 CD.

Has to be standard CD format, not MP3.
I've had a heck of a time with burned CDs, though. Seems like once the head unit heats up they start to skip like mad till finally they won't play at all. Thank god for the cassette feature!

Contact John Kuhn. He's the vendor "Pops Stereo" on the forum. He can hook you up with a head unit to suit your needs.
He got me set up with my current AVIC F90BT setup that I love.

Steering wheel controls still FUNCTIONAL?
What about a head unit out of a new mercury, looking to keep factory steering wheel control and add: AUX IN and Able to play MP3's on a CD (data mode)
You can add a steering wheel control interface with most of the Pioneer decks. Look at the Pionner FH P800 BT in the Pops Stereo forum.
