Hello All,
After owning my MM for 6 months I've noticed that my drivers seat makes a rubbing leather noise constantly as I'm traveling on the road. No other seat does so when I picked up my son today I was talking to him about it when he said well that because the console isn't centered. He's 16 so I thought yea right. I pulled over and looked and sure enough the console is so tight on the drivers side that you can't get your hand or barely a ruler in between it and the side of the drivers seat. On the other side there a good 1/2 to 3/4 inch between the seat and the console.
I can't believe thats the way its supposed to be but I don't have another MM around to compare it to so I'm asking you guys and gals to check yours.
I don't know what they'll do about it as the shifter is dead center in the console slot so they can't move it right or left. It will no doubt wear the finish off the side of the console and rub a hole in the side of the drivers seat next to the console over time. I've only got 1470 miles on it now so no visible damage yet.
Be interesting to get the results on this one.
Thanks,
Mike:banana2:

Interesting. Mine was built 7/02. The console is dead center. I wonder whether you have the driver's seat adjusted in such a way that you are rubbing the console? Maybe try adjusting the seat up a little and/or back a little to see if the rubbing stops.
My bet is it will go away.

Mine had a squeak, replaced the seat rails and it went away. build date 6/02, our cars must be brothers. If the aforementioned "fix" doesn't work, have the dealer replace the rails. Just my .02

Or if you hate taking it to dealer and seat feels good, how about a sheet of low friction material (nylon, HDPE) between seat and console.

Animal,
Tried that. The seat would have to be moved left to stop the rubbing as it rubs from half way up the cosole to the top of the console. My console is also sitting 3/4 inch to far to the left under the oil and voltage gauges.

Didn't you have shifter problems a while back, Capt?

OK, then! I guess the next move would be to see what could be done to shift that console a wee bit to the right.
What fun!

Sarge,
Your right, but it was the not wanting to go into reverse thing.
Supposedly fixed this last time in the shop. Since it didn't happen all the time I'm not sure if thats fixed or not. Had to push it and hold it towards park for it to go into reverse.

hmm, have them replace the shifter, they did it on mine, then they can adjust the console at the same time

Merc,
Why did they replace your shifter?
Wouldn't the hole where the shifter is now have to be enlarged in order to move everything left?
Been a long time since I laid under my long gone 68 Roadrunner to work on a shifter.

I was saving this post to see if anybody had the same problem. Here goes...
I bought the car in Feb '03 and didn't really notice anything wrong until my wife pointed out that when she moved the seat forward, it was rubbing against the console ( I drive with the seat all the way back ).
We started looking closer and noticed that the driver's seat was angled toward the centre console, so the front inside corner was rubbing. Went back to the selling dealer for 5,000 km ( 3,000 mi ) service and pointed it out. They said no problem, it would be taken care of under warranty. I got the car back and it did look better, but still not quite right.
I never really felt it while I was driving but you could see it.
The invoice said R & R drivers seat assembly.
Cut a long story short...oops, too late.
I had other issues with the selling dealer which I have mentioned here before so I switched dealers ( if anyone wants to know where not to go in Windsor, Ontario, please PM or E-Mail me ).
My new dealer, Ken Knapp Ford in Essex, Ontario were excellent. I went there for the 10,000 km (6,000 mi ) service and explained.
The Service Advisor took a look at it and found that the selling dealer had removed the seat/rail assembly and slotted the f@#$ing holes east to west to try and straighten it out instead of removing the seat from the rails.
He called Oakville ( FoMoCoCan HQ ) who forwarded him to Dearborn. They told him, and I quote: "What?! On no account is the customer to drive the car off the lot until the seat/rail assembly is replaced". Apparently in an accident, the whole thing could have sheared off and sent me, the seatbelt, the airbag, et al through the windshield.
I got a new seat/rail assembly and cushion, installed straight and true. Downside, they used the old cover which is starting to show a little bit of wear.
This may not be your problem Capt, but it may be of help to others.
Good Luck.
