They are not "easy" on the paint.
Last time I used one was on my '78 T-Bird - clamped on the center top edge of the trunk lid under the back window. It didn't deform the metal except on the bottom side from the two allen head set screws. All in all it wasn't a terrible experience - the mount never came loose by itself!

I have had a K40 before. Had it on the trunk of my Camaro for 2 years before I sold the car. No damage to the paint on top, but I cleaned it and put heavy wax on it before putting it on. Also the K40 and the Wilson I mention below have a rubber part that goes under the antenna to help. On any clamp on antenna, you have to scrape to the metal to set the screws into. This is done under the lip of the trunk.
I currently have a Wilson 1000 on the trunk of my Vic and have had no problems. It has been there for almost 2 years.
Spend some extra money on the antenna. It is a very important part of your system. I had a bit extra to spend so I got the Wilson, but I would not hesitate getting the K40 again. IMHO though, I find the Wilson to be a better antenna in receive and transmit. Try Walcott CB (dot) com for prices and specs.
If you need anything else, let me know if I can help.

I used the Wilson on mine last summer. I did mess up sheet metal and paint. But, I screwed on to tight in the first place. Ended up using a magnet which still scratched paint. Had to get fixed when I got home. I would say just be cautious.

Check out Antenex (now part of Laird Technologies). They make professional mobile antennas. I've got one of their rubber-lined mounts on the trunk on my car, and it hasn't scratched or dinged it at all. It comes with an NMO mount, and getting a 10-meter antenna to fit for your CB shouldn't be a problem.
