Check out Breadfan's Tire Matrix here >>>>>> http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=26999
General consensus is that 255 is the largest on stock rims. 265 is questionable (i.e. maybe-maybe not). 275 and higher require widened rims. There are some who run wider on the stock 8" rims -- but I think many would say that it is an issue with safety.

I'm running 295/45-18 Hankooks on the rear at 40# on non widened wheels. DR has this same setup with no problems whatsoever.

Look at this thread: http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=42012&highlight=PICNIC
Look for the pic of the front of DR's blue MM with a member walking behind it. His MM has the 295/45-18 Hankook's on it.
Here is the ad for the tires that I got got from a member here:

Brian, any issues with the width as far as throwing road debris up? The fit looks like they are just inside the wheel well.

It is about the same if running 255/55-18s. They are just the same height as the 245/55-18s.

Adam, and I both run 285/50/18's on the rear with no problems at all, I run 42 lbs., fills the wheel opening nice. The tires we bought have better numbers that the stock tires, and are Z rated.

So if a 285 and a 295 series tire can fit on a stock non-widen 18x8 wheel why don't more people do it?

Scared, by the flag wavers.

I don't know why more people don't do it.
I gave mine a pretty punishing test run and found no problems. If there was going to be anything wrong, I think I would have discovered it already. I don't plan on driving the car any harder than I already have with the 285s. At most, I'd call my driving "spirited".
And even if they only last 15k (though I think I'll probably get twice that) they were cheap enough ($120/pc) that I don't really care.

...and there are several tires by this manufacturer that will work well on the front. The 285/50/18's are .6-.7" taller than OEM tires, so they may not work with traction control. Best tire for the buck. I looked for days, and compiled info on charts prior to purchasing these, European racing tires.

You can mount a P305 on an 8" rim if you want.
Certain tire manufacturers DO rate their P285-50s for use on an 8" rim.
NO tire manufacturers rate a P295-45 for use on a 8" rim. (9-9.5" minimum width typically)
It all comes down to how hard you will drive your car.
Mounting a big tire on a less than recommended width rim cause the sidewalls to flex and work differently than was tested by the manufacturers.
The aspect ratio of the tire has an effect also...lower profiles/shorter sidewalls require wider rims.
It may or may not cause a problem...
But the manufacturers will only recommend a minimum rim size based on their testing and what they are confident is a completely safe mounting application.

I've seen a Marauder with these Toyo Proxes S/T tires mounted on the OEM 8" rims...they looked good!
Toyo rates the P285-50-18 tires for an 8" rim.
