I have a 2003 Mercury Marauder and Ever since I bought the car completely stock it had a pretty loud vibration noise under the hood sometimes when I turn the key on the on position(Engine not on) and when the engine is on(seems more on the mornings and cold starts). Also when in idle it may come on and go away.
It hasn't ever really bothered me because it goes away within 20 seconds and doesn't seem to affect anything or light up cel's.

Iv'e searched all over the internet and never really got any answers. Some say maybe it's the ABS brain(I know thats not the correct term but its the module that has all those plastic/wire connections going to it).

Also I got it checked out at a mechanic and it's definitely not my radiotar fan going on and off. So thats off the checklist. He says sometimes it's the abs and not to worry.

In this marauder video IT HAS THIS EXACT SAME VIBRATING NOISE! Although mine seems not as loud lol. It comes on right before he turns on the ignition.

Any input? Thanks in advance:banana:

Take the serpentine belt off and start it cold and see if the noise is gone. That will indicate a driven accessory with a mechanical issue. That is a cheap and free diagnosis. Could be a harmonic balancer, maybe the suspension pump. Do you have to start it to get the noise or just turn the key on?

all i need is to turn the key on, but if i just turn the engine on too it will still make the vibrating noise.

Thats the air compressor leveling the car. It is normal.

Possibly the air suspension pump.

Really? If it's really not hurting my car I would feel as if 4,400 pounds of weight just left my body.

It only raises the rear. Turn the key on after the car sits for a while and step out. Watch the rear, you'll see it rise when the noise starts.

but is the noise still supposed to come from under the hood? Thanks in advance for all the help.

Yes, thats where the compressor is located. If you had something heavy in the trunk and removed it, you'll also hear the air vent out and the rear lower.

Thanks. That really was a load off my chest. I always had that little thought in my head "What if it really is bad..."

The compressor is under the airbox, direct your ear there and see if that's the source.

Hi

Since you missed this, you should know to open the trunk and flip the air shock switch off, before lifting the rear off the ground for any reason. Tell any mechanic that works on the car as they may miss it.

I'm not sure if they 'will' for sure, but the air shocks can get screwed up running with the rear axle off the ground or even just raised.

YUP it sounds like the air compressor.
Mine was very loud when it was on.
But when it burnt out and I got a new one installed the new one is much more quite. I can only hear it if my door is open and the stereo is completely off.

I'm not sure if they 'will' for sure, but the air shocks can get screwed up running with the rear axle off the ground or even just raised.

They are not air shocks, they are air springs. The regular rear shocks act as stops for the downward droop of the suspension. If you do not turn off the air suspension and key on while raised, the bags will drop all pressure. You would have to key on and wait for the car to raise back up when putting it back on the ground. If the key will not be on, turning off air suspension off is unnecessary, but not detrimental as a precaution.
