Anybody know the fluid capacity of our dif? I'm swapping in synthetic fluid since I have to fix a weeping cover anyways.

Also, I'll just fill it til the fill plug starts overflowing, or is there something else I should know?

Lastly, any sense in putting an aftermarket cover with a girdle on it? Bling or actually needed? I've yet to hear of a single MM blowing a rear dif through the cover.

Thanks!

I seem to recall the amount being 3 pints but just fill it till it starts to run out the plug hole as far as the gridle goes unless your makeing alot of HP its not nessary save your $ and put it elsewhere cheers

2.37 Liters or 5 pints.

For the price and since your already be taking the cover off, it's cheap insurance to go with a axle girdle. Just don't over tighten the screws. It's only like 5 ft lbs, barely snug. There is also a kit to replace the differential bearing cap bolts with studs and nuts. 5 pints of synthetic fluid will be enough as it takes 4.75 pints. If you use synthetic fluid you won't need to add any friction modifier. You can also rebuild the differential with the carbon fiber clutches (Ford P/N: M-4700-C).

If you use synthetic fluid you won't need to add any friction modifier. Actually, that depends...some synth lubes include the FM...like Redline, IIRC. Others, like Motorcraft for instance, do not.

Other dif' girdle installation tips ..... use LocTite on the allen-head cover bolts. *Even though they were correctly torqued, after a short period of time mine backed-out a bit and caused a leak.
.
if you go with the Ford Racing Performance Parts, replace the anodized allen-head cover bolts with stainless steel counter parts ( 5/16" X 1¼" ). *The anodized corrode / rust, even if not driven in the winter snow / salt.
.
put a small dab of silicone seal around the load bolts. *Wards-off small leaks.

My diff chatters a ton with Redline with no additive. I had to put ford racing additive in it to get it to not chatter around corners. Your mileage may vary. The only additive I found that works well is ford racing. The auto parts store CRC and TransX does not work well.
