Me thinks calling AAA would be easier in so many ways... :)

I used chains once, they are a pain to put on, very dirty job.
The ones we had you could not go over 15mph or it chewed up the sidewalls.
On hard ice it did not seem to make much difference, still had traction problems.

Interesting,
These might be better than the chains I normally carry.
Much more pricey though.
The thing with AA.....
If you are stuck in an ice storm in my home town (the city of hills where nothing is on the level) you might be waiting a really long time before anyone can get to you. Not to mention being stuck "target like" partially sideways on a hill.
I know the chains are worth it. Yes you have to drive slow and they are a pain but....They work unless the snow is deeper than the floor pans.
If you replace them before they wear out it really minimizes the risk of a broken link. I believe the control you gain (with chains) to avoid an accident outweighs the minimized risk of a broken link and possible wheel well damage.
The best bet is a second car and the weather station. Even so you can't always avoid the snow. Lets say the wifes car is down, are you going to give her the foul weather car and take the bus? Maybe then you would take the good car out in foul weather? I do.
