View Full Version : To what unusual lengths have you gone to baby your MM?

Inspired by a conversation with RoyLPita and http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=52994, I thought I'd share a quick story about one of the silly things I've done to baby my MM.

Mine's not a showroom queen; she's a daily driver, but I still try to keep her clean as much as I can. Accidentally getting diverted onto a gravel road out in the country makes me angry. Living in Wisconsin, and not having a garage, I keep her in a storage unit from Thanksgiving to April Fool's Day, and I'll scramble to duck into someone's garage if there is threat of snow outside of those months.

I was apartment hunting two Saturdays ago, well into April, when snow is rare but there's still a touch of salt on the roads. I found a place I liked, which was vacant and had a garage, and filled out the application and was handing it back to the property owner. I knew that there was a more than negligible chance of snow that night, so my MM fever surfaced and as I handed her the application, I asked her if the garage space was also vacant, which I knew it was. She confirmed, and I told her that regardless of whether or not I got the apartment, I would pay her $20 to let me park the MM there for 4 or 5 days while the snow fell, was salted, and melted and washed away. She gave me an incredibly skeptical look, and I stuttered to explain that I keep it out of the snow and salt, but she still thought I was a whack job. Regardless, that day, I handed her an application and $20 and she handed me a garage door opener. I ended up getting the place before our 4/5 day verbal agreement was up and I'm moved in a few weeks later.

So technically, my Marauder has lived here longer than I have! :D

As a funny aside, in the back and forth phone calls and visits to the place over the course of that weekend and following week, some of the first questions my new landlord asked me were:

"Are you a cop?"
"Are you a drug dealer?"
"Is that car stolen?"

So, have you done anything so silly? How did people react to your bizarre behavior?

From one car Snob to another. Great story and tooo funny. The interest level of some people is just too shallow to understand. Caring for our cars keeps life interesting as well as caring for people.

That story sounds normal to me. The landlady was in the wrong for even questioning that LOL.

So tell me something, is everyone here like me and do whatever it takes to avoid even the smallest puddle, especially when the baby is clean? I must look like a crackhead escaping the mental ward when there's huge obstacles (1'x1' puddle)!

I drive all the way up to the 8th floor of the parking garage so I can get some empty spaces around the MM during the weekdays. It's out of the sun and hopfully this cuts down on door dings.

+1 on the obsession!

I pay monthly for a 10x20 storage unit that is 3 miles from my house and she must be in by 9pm when the main gates get locked for the night...:D

Right on. When I'm in the Marauder, I'll dodge all the puddles I can. But when I'm in the Jeep, I aim right for them!

Why is everyone afraid of driving their cars in the rain?

Besides the crappy stock wiper blades i like my New front/worn rear tire/ Traction off combo for when the roads are wet.

I spend far too much energy and time washing, waxing and polishing the MM. This fact has not escaped notice by the wife. :D .... or the neighbors. :P

I am absolutely paranoid about parking in any store parking lot and will pick the spot that is farthest away from the main traffic area. The wife has noticed this peculiarity too. ;)

I will drive my MM in the rain; but will wipe it down at the first opportunity to do so. If there is tree crap on the car from the rain, I will stand "in the rain" with a garden hose and clean it off. I think my neighbors are a little concerned about me "washing" my car in the rain.

I do avoid puddles, objects on the road, and potholes -- regardless of when or where.

When picking a parking space at work, I am very selective of who I park near. Some cars just look like the owner doesn't give a crap about his car or anyone else's -- so I'll move on to someone else.

I have parked at the top of parking garages before to stay away from the main traffic/parking areas. When I park the MM, I am less concerned with convenience and more with security and potential damage.

I am very aware of the line crossers and the lane weavers on the highway -- don't want them coming anywhere near the MM. I'll shake tailgaters in a second -- by leaving them in the dust or just moving over.

There are probably lots of other things that I do -- but I can't think of them right now.

I'm sure some of you do this...I wipe my shoes off to clear the tiny pebbles before gently setting them on the precious embroidered mats. :help: I also only touch the rubber trim to close the doors. ;)

I get very tense when the clouds roll in...

Oh, and absolutely no food or drinks allowed!

Just call me Mr. Hey Nell

Fear not, I have NO problems mashing the pedal down here and there...took her up to 135MPH last Friday!

I keep my garage queen as clean as possible. I just get a California car Duster for her. This is all she should need from now on. I soon plan on removing the wheels, sanitizing them inside and out, and also the wheel wells. Next comes the frame and underside. My wife is going to have me committed.

I have a storage unit I have had since month 2 for the merc. And I always keep it clean and I have a californa duster for when I take her out to get the dust off. And I only touch the rubber window seal to close the door. I have quick detail wax so if I see finger prints or anything else I clean it no matter where I'm at. And I'm sure there is more that I'm forgetting.

I have a nice door mat beside mine in the garage so I can wipe my feet before I get in the car. Keeps any grains of sand off of my dark carpet.
