View Full Version : Installed JLT Oil Seperator - questions

When I installed my K&N FIPK kit I noticed the Tbody was dirty and a bit oily. Everyone here said most of the oil comes from the PCV side, so that's the side I went for. (I could probably use one on the other side too right?)

Got the black JLT oil seperator kit. I installed it on the PCV side. I didn't like the way it installed! If you install it like in the pics it ends up sticking WAY out and UP - like almost touching the hood - looks like crap and I didn't trust it.

I needed to add some hose - which I had - I ended up putting removing the PCV - cleaned him out - heated up with hair dryer to remove the other hard to get off part.

I ended up putting on like this: PCV valve + 1" of hose + 90 degree bend + short peice of hose + JLT seperator + short piece of hose + factory hard plastic PCV host -> intake.

The JLT instead of being vertical is horizontal. Any issues with this? It doesn't stick out as far out and looks a lot neater. Will it function "just as good" horizontally as vertically?

I'll post a picture later on.

THANKS

PM fastblackmerc, I think he's got one installed on his car.

Yeah I saw pictures of it, nice and neat -- It's installed on the DRIVERS SIDE! Its really easy to do on that side compared to passenger side Marauder.

I did notice quite a bit of oil getting sucked into the intake. Would have thought this would be a pretty popular mod here...

Still need to post the pic I took of it.

How come you don't have one Cheesehead?

I don't know about anyone else ,but I never really consider it on anything but a supercharged motor. But now that you mention it my 5.4 in my truck was pretty gooey in the lower intake area when we yanked that 3 weeks ago.

Remove the hard plastic section of hose that connects the PCV valve and the upper intake - notice how much oil is in it - takes about 10 seconds. I think you'll be surprised how much is there.

Hmmm...Only problem is my upper intake looks alittle funny...the previous owner added a pulley and a belt to the upper intake of my Mustang....maybe I need to take this off

It's on the list, a couple other things to install before I get to that one.

If it sits horizontal, it will pool...Vertically...the oil drains back into the head...

This filter is to be installed on the passenger side PCV...

The drivers side ...is the "open" side...{allows metered air} to flow in (No vacum)...Hence, no separater needed...

The passenger side is the vacum side...and where oil is sucked into the intake...Hence the need for a separater...

Hope this helps...

I still don't see the need for one of these but to each his own??

197K miles and 113K of it with the ProCharger....IF I have a problem with oil in the intake it isn't apparent!!!:shake:

This is the correct way to install the JLT oil separator. I think that was in the instructions.

To each his own, but...
All this oil seperator stuff is silly.
Slap a breather on each cam cover and call it a day.
No oil in the intake...EVER.

Maybe its just me, But if your using a quality synthetic oil and quality oil filter and changing it often, this part is not needed. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Tis' true...to each their own...

I pour out @ 2-3 TBSP a month, out of the separater...

I rather not have that on my valves and pistons...

Zack...I've always wondered what the draw backs are, if any, of removing the PCV system and just putting on breathers...

Any thoughts?

If no drawbacks...I'll do it in a second...

Wow when it rains it pours! I'll have to get it vertical again.

Thanks for the replies!

You are dumping a small portion of metered air out of the engine, but from mine and others' experiences, it makes no noticeable difference with the tune.
Add breathers and then have the car tuned and you will be 100% good to go!

Your oil life and engine life will be cut 50% or more!!!! The military came up with PCV in the 50's to extend oil life by removing moisture and fuel dilution from the oil thus increasing engine life 3X or more!!

I WOULD NOT DEFEAT THE PCV SYSTEM because of a little oil in your intake!!:shake: BTW, race engines run with little or no vacuum so PCV is not used on them but they either blow up or get rebuilt every 5 hours or so.....in street cars we normally try to achieve longevity??:D

Another drawback is "Blowby Stench" inside your car!!:o

But...to each his own!!

lol - Blowby stench! :eek::D

Anyone got a picture or prefered method of how they mounted a JLT oil seperator on the PCV side on an N/A car??? Keeping the unit vertical and using the shortest possible hose lengths it sticks out pretty far - as in almost touching the hood.

Or a S/C car for that matter, I want to see how this thing is supposed to be mounted, last time I saw it on JLT's site, it showed it mounted on the D.S., now their site says it goes on the PCV side??? WTFO??

You can gut the OEM PCV valve and connect it to the clean air source in front of the TB.....install an after market PCV in the driver's side valve cover bung and run to hose from it to the intake PCV connection......you have reversed the flow and have plenty of room for a separator at the new PCV location if you want one??

I used an EV-111 which shuts completely when in boost but N/A you can use any of them that will fit the bung!!
