I would like to go a tad wider and a tad lower on the rears. Maybe a 255/50/18. Not to bust anyone's balls but the Range Rover I just towed had 255/55/18's on it. I always thought the rear BFG's were a bit tall big personally. I guess like SUV tires. Apparently. It is about time I replace all fours - if I find someone that sells that combination WITH 235/50's matching - out comes the plastic.

You know Tire Rack is really going to be peeved when they store all those tires everybody claimed they needed to buy. I'm an optimist. If you guys have unanimously turned your back on BFG I'll probably be their only buyer of tires and they'll be forced to sell them to me for $19.99 ea because that's all their worth.:D

Well I'm happy BFG is backing that size again.
I was told it was going to be further out than that, by BFG rep just a couple weeks ago .
This will be the first time my car has been fitted with anything other than OEM stock.
I got all my parts today for my rear end upgrade 31 spline Moser axles with a new Cobra diff and the 255-55-18 Dunlop SP9000 & new KDWS for the front.
This is the fourth round for tires @ 76500 and I use snows for 1/4 of that.
I did have BFG make good on a replacement set of the "first" fronts that had a shimmy after 2-3 K.

What is so crappy in the BFG?

Most MM owners get really poor life out of them. Typically the center sections are worn out in under 15,000 miles, even when maintaining proper air pressures and moderate driving.

I put a set of four on my car the last time I ran them so I could rotate, and I still only got 18,000 miles out of them.

Between the poor wear and spotty availability, I went with an aftermarket brand on the rear and am well satisfied.

Hi,
I am glad BFG is back with the correct size rear tire since they are on the new Camaro. My rears lasted over 20K. They way I drive, I was surprised they even lasted that long. I was tired of the traction control coming on with the wrong size tires I had on. If there was another same size tire brand out there for the rears, I would have bought them, since there isn't, I will buy BFG.

The 255/50/18 is slightly smaller (14 more revs per mile) and I can adjust for that with my Xcal2 hopefully. that can't be worse than a bald 245/55. The ONLY size even close would be a 265/80/12 (yep - I checked!!). All horsing aside - the stock rears are a little too tall for my taste - I wanted widened rims but I think a slighty wider tire will be fine. Anyone that finds this incorrect - please pipe up before I blow the coin.

I think most of us have moved on from the BFG's.

IMHO... a crappy tire that's never in stock when you need them.
I have had three sets of rears on my MM and never got more than 21,000 miles on any of them even increasing the rear pressure to 38 psi.

However, tire wear does not irritate me as much as the availability of the OEM tires. This has been a problem with rear tire availability from BFG since about 2005 -- about 6 months after the last MM was built.

We contacted BFG via their website, e-mail and telephone and flooded them with information about tire wear and the need to increase production on the BFG KDWS 245/55/18 rear tires. We told them that they were currently the only supplier of that size for the MM. We told them that we could buy tires as fast as they could produce them because we were getting less than 25K miles on the rears and were replacing them every 2 years or sooner. BFG had a lock on that size in the market. The BFG Response --- NOTHING, ZIP, NADA for the past 4-5 years. Rear tire availabilty has gone from bad to worse and I don't think they care.

Maybe BFG is doing so well in this economy that they can blow off 11,052 easy customers. Maybe they can blow off the sale of about 9K- 10K tires every year. Maybe $1.5 Million in tires sales per year just ain't enough for BFG to worry about. Maybe this is just part of their overall business plan.

Maybe I don't give a "rat's azz" whether they go out of business now. They ignored us for 5 years. Paybacks are a Biatch. :mad2: Screw BFG and the horse they came in on.

Ms. Denmark

We get around 25000 or more on a set. It took some experimenting with the rear pressures to get max life and not to brake the fronts and artificially wear out the rears lol. I also heard the Camaro will use the same size so that's BFGs incentive. The fronts would last a really long time but as of 4/29 I haven't had a proper alignment, but its on the list as is finally putting the BFG's back on as winter seems to have breathed its last hurrah. Next set for us will probably be some Michelin Pilots, which version I am still researching. Mr Man

I for one love the traction, but cannot tolerate the wear and out of stock BS any longer.

My wife refuses to let me buy these anyways, any other brand fine, but she is pissed about spending coin yearly on tires!

It's a shame they handle so good in the rain.

I am looking for new fronts. I have almost new KDWSs on the widened rears (but the fronts are gone) so I will buy one more set of fronts, if I can find them reasonably priced. I just found a site that has them for $88.11 per tire (plus $50 handling fee, so more like $113 each - still better than anywhere else I could find, though) and are showing "Backordered until 2009-06-13". Everywhere else I looked were 169 or more (up to $210 - I'd be crazy to pay that much for these tires...) The site is rims-n-tires.com. Anyone ever deal with these folks? Are they good? I'm probably gonna pull out the plastic tomorrow and order a pair. Been running the snows/steelies too long...

You can adjust revs/mile with the Xcal, which will give you a correct speedometer reading. What you cannot do is adjust the ratio of front wheel revs/mile to rear wheel revs/mile. It seems to be pretty much fixed at 5%, with a very narrow tolerance (something like 3.5% to 6.5%).
If you go with 255/50/18 rear, with OEM front, expect traction control problems (like this (http://mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?p=737530#post73 7530)).

Because they don't make the tires BF Goodrich does.
Makes me wonder how much longer BF will continue making the rear tires? It wouldn't shock me to find out this will be the last time they put this tire on the production line.

John,

If you're smart, anything BUT BFGs.

I've read alot of BFG bashing regarding the odd rear size for our cars and the wear-out-the-center issue.

While I agree this one particular size tire has problems, I have used BFG KDWS many times on a few different cars. They are great tires with good all-weather performance as well as summer performance. They have a very rigid sidewall for precise turn-in feel.

And I see a conspicuous lack of complaints about the BFG fronts.

So, I would just like to point out that BFG is not a bad tire in general. Just the 245/55/18 on our marauder. Disclaimer: all the BFG I have used were 50 series or shorter.

Yes, you are probably right. However, the point of fact is that our cars require 4 tires and BFG has dropped the ball big time on the 245/55/18 rears. They have dropped that ball consistently for the past 5 years and have given people :bs: due in dates when they could expect the 245/55/18 in stock. Then they kept pushing the date farther to the right. They had a lock on the market in that size and just didn't care about MM owners. Otherwise, they would have maintained some sort of reasonable availability of fronts and rears to fit our car. In short, BFG has said they don't need our business or it is not important enough to them. That game goes both ways.

Won't disagree with that, I ran BFG T/As on my custom vans in the 70's and had a couple of sets of 60 series tires on various cars since then. However, IMO, they really dropped the ball on the OEM rear tires and never addressed the wear issues, or availability.

Because of that, I'm through with them.
