Im really confused, whats the optimal temperature to run quarters. Let the car sit on idle for 10 after a long drive? or let it sit with the ignition off? how cold do you want it to be is what im trying to get it? thanks guys.

My best times have come after a long cool down piriod. Getting the motor as cold as you can through hood up, ice, and time. Then move to the staging lanes, and if you can push through the lanes til your 2nd or 3rd from the burn out, start your engine, and idle slow. Do a short burn out (it helps even with street tires.) Then Stage. if your temp needle has just come off the C or just up to the actuall gauge area, you'll get a great run.
If you can hook.
amerikan,
What MAD-3R said is correct. If you are really going to the track please feel free to call and I'll be glad to give you some additional tips that will help lower your ET.

Ummm...I have a different approach, but it needs to be tested before I write about it here.
See ya'll later, K?
Getting the best number in the 1/4 always comes from a cold motor. I dont like to kid myself and make clod passes. I like a true warmed up number so I know what it will do on the street.

Mac,
Could you be a little more vague.

It's either that or you can have yor girlfriend climb out on the hood and ice down the intake while you drive....
I understand the theory behind a cold engine giving the best times. However, in terms of "treating your car right", let me ask this. It seems that running down a track at WOT is a hard thing on the engine, and doing it to a cold engine is even harder. If an engine is fully warmed up, wouldn't the strain on the engine be less? I know it would add a little bit to your times, but in the long run, wouldn't running a cold engine hard detract from engine life? Maybe I'm way off base on my purely amateur theorizing here, so you experienced motorheads help me out on this.

What you want is a warm/normal, temp in the engine, trans and rear with a COLD intake temp.
If you drive to the track your good to go on warming everything up.For flat out 1 time shots ice the upper intake and lower,or wait tell the water temp is below the first mark,or just off "C".You'll get one good flyer then the thermostat will do it's thing and heat the water up to 190 again.
If you want to help keep the temps down AT THE TRACK remove the stat or GUT it then you can idle the car and spray the radiator with water to lower the temp before your next blast. At best you'll be looking at about 30-45mins between blasts.
Our man MartyO basicly hot lapped at Dallas and ran 14.2's.
Using the above cooling he would have been in the 13's easy!
