View Full Version : Can't get into the 12's N/A? BS!!

So I venture out to opening test and tune at the track today. 70*, no wind.....perfect.
Stock tires, airbags off, lowered the rear to about 30psi. Left the front alone. Had sway bars ousted prior to getting there. 1/4 tank of 93 octane. Toss the matts and spare.
Got here early, 2nd car on the track, which means it was pretty damn cold, but had some fresh VHT. :coolman:
Up against a 2008 Bullitt Mustang, BEAUTIFUL car.
Now, seeing as though I never ran this thing yet, I was pretty optimistic, hoping for a low 14 with my extensive bolt on mod list.
Go ahead, take a minute to look down at my sig, it's in there.
Thing that erked me was that the the damn tree couldn't clear the reaction times from the first race. I havent a clue what my reaction time was, they figured it out and reset it right after my lap (figures). :mad2:
Avoid the water to the front tires, do a little happy go tire burn, forget to put window up, get yelled at by track official. :o Dipshit on the P.A. reminds everyone to put their windows up when staging. Dipshit on P.A. then refers to my car as a Crown Vic, followed by "Grand Sport." He then comments on how he thinks the Bullitt Mustang next to me should have a spoiler on it. :shake: Oh yes, it's all on the video, clear as day.
Load the TC a bit, drop brake, and mash gas at the third light. Vault pretty nicely considering stock tires, very minimal spin, nice skid in second, chirp in third. Car feels good, no wind, no sway....and no Bullitt Mustang?
Shut her down and spin back around for my timeslip. As I roll up to the burly fello in the little shed with his arm extended to me, he utters; "You need a helmet if you gonna keep racing, you hear me? You need one thirteen-nine nine or better."
I'm sorry, what? Che? Get the **** out. Really? The man gave me my slip, and I nearly lost it when I saw 13.613. Well I'll be a sumbitch. :burnout:
My next run I ran a 13.9, (BAD launch) and two 14.1's. (Flashed convertor too high, got skiddish at line.)
Basically my best to worst in all four runs were 1/2 second off. Gotta find the sweet spot for my launch to get direct consistency.
The nice fellow in the Bullitt missed a gear on his run, he pulled consistent 13.5's after that. :burnout:Awesome.
Let me tell you guys something about tuning. I think those of you with mail order tunes are absolutely ****ing nuts. There, I said it. Sorry Zack, sorry Lidio. Let's face it, some cars are factory freaks, (mine) and some are dogs. Unless you strap the car on a dyno and pull run after run while tuning and playing, you will NEVER REALIZE THE FULL ENGINE POTENTIAL. I had J&M Motorsports (Mustang Specialty shop) strap mine up while tuning, and the car was COMPLETELY different.
Soooooo, let me ask you. Say I throw on 16" steelies with sticky drags, (will make my rear an effective 4.56) NAZ intake, Lightning MAF, 39lb injectors, pull the heat shield and headlight, control arms, race gas, some other do-dads,and maybe some light porting. NA 12second car? I sure as Hell think so.

I remember that feeling when I ran my 13.72 I actually thought I was running 14.2 or slower, came around and got my slip and just sat at the booth with my mouth wide open and the import behind me laying on the horn. I think once we break that 100 mph barrier we start to notice the difference.

I ran 13.6's @ 100 all day, and 1.98 60's, with no pullies, no spacer, no water pump, no TB, no stat...etc...etc.
My only mods were SW longtubes, 4.10's, tune, CAI, PI3000. I never ran any better than that, but again...I never really ran in cool dry weather either.
If you think you can get away with an unsafe tune to "maximize" your cars potnetial...then by all means...go right ahead...lean on it till it breaks.
The tuners on this site know how to maximize power, and make things safe.
If you think you can keep those mods, and "tune" your way into the 12's...you're out of your mind.
P.S. I ran those times on widened real wheels also...which...despite the drag radials...actually drop the car a tenth or two when N/A. But my days of being N/A are now over.

The difference between a 13.6 and a 12.9 is best described like this:
A hot girl that goes to church and has has one Vodka and Cranberry is a 13.6
A Hot girl who moved out at 14 years old, shoots meth and has a tattoo of a lawnmower where her pubic hair once was....12.9.

I don't know what my 1/4 mile time is. We only have a whimpy 1/8 mile track here in stinky Buffalo. Haven't had time to run it out to Letchworth. Maybe this Summer?
Gee, should I just double the 1/8 mi time. Ewww, that's ugly.
Funny thing is, this Marauder feels a lot like my '78 T-bird used to, now the headers are on. I don't think I'm running a 12.8 though. 127 cubic inch difference and 10:1 vs 11.8:1 compression. My math tells me my 'feelings' are off a bit....

Yup, it's Leicester, just behind Letchworth Park. Used to be called Dragcity years ago. That is where I used to run the T-chicken. Kind of a long drive from Buffalo, and god forbid if something broke out there. I remember getting rqained out one Sunday. The ride home on slicks at 12 psi was pretty scary. We all drive the same damn car. Well, most of us do. I have a hard time understanding the reasoning as to why some guys think this is a fruitless challenge and offer banter and words of non-encouragement.. It's a CHALLENGE, it's supposed to be hard to obtain.
Me? I'm gonna take my time. I just bought a new house and have other hobbies I indulge myself in, so I'm not about to spend every extra $$$ on mods. Little at a time. I'm DELIGHTED that I am in mid 13's in a 4,400lb car on street tires. If I get there first, great. When I first ran my Marauder at 75-80 (Spring '03) the track announcer kept calling my car a Cadillac!?!?
...WTF?
After my second run, and the second time he said "Black Cadillac" I shoepolished 'MERC' in huge letters across the rear window.
The next time up he realized what a tard he was and said: "Oh! that must be one of those new Mercury Marauders!"

Yes, it is very wise to have a complete dyno tune after every mod you do...especially a converter, headers, etc. Ultimately, thats what you should do IMO. Some people though have to resort to the mail because going to a proper tuner with a dyno just isn't possible.
As for 12's N/A...I just don't see it happening without touching the motor, and doing extensive weight reduction. The car is just too heavy, and the cid too small. You'd spend more money trying to get it into the 12's N/A than you would on a supercharger.
Cruztaker I believe was the fastest N/A Marauder ever. 13.2's @ 103 and change IIRC. He weighs maybe 150lbs soaking wet. He had everything done to his Marauder under the sun for N/A runs...and if he couldn't do it...it ain't happening...unless you touch the motor.
