View Full Version : Does my motor need to be pulled?

So I start my 04 MM one day and it is making this loud clicking noise. After about 30-60 seconds it quiets down and completely stops. I keep an ear on the noise at start-up for about 2 weeks... it doesn't go away. :mad2: Every time I start the car I hear this noise and like I said it goes away after about a minute. I finally take it to the dealer to get to the bottom of this noise. They tell me that it is my timing belt/chain and they have to take my motor out to get to it. Cost = $1750 on parts alone:bigcry:
and from what I am told, this can damage the motor because of low oil pressure. I don't have any kind of warranty on my MM and one of the service techs at the dealer says he can do the job for me "on the side" for $1400 (parts & labor). Now, I absolutely love my MM and am willing to shell out $1400 just to get this noise fixed but my question is: Does this sound like a timing chain issue? If so, do you really have to pull the entire motor to get to it? And last, should I trust this guy with my car? He is a certified Ford Technician so I am really considering taking him up on his offer. Any advise guys???:help::help::help::help ::help::help::help::help:

How many miles? Should you trust a guy who knows works for Ford...but wont be working on your car but for his own pockets?
You would be better of spending 1400 on a warranty.

Without actually hearing the sound it's very difficult to diagnose, but it could be timing chain related. You could just have a bad tensioner. Put a stethoscope on the motor and see if you can narrow down where the noise is coming from. I will say that you absolutely do NOT have to pull the motor out to replace either the chain(s) or the tensioner(s)...and the parts don't cost anywhere NEAR $1750...that's absurd.
Like TiTo asked, how many miles?
Do you have the fake OEM oil pressure gauge?

Mine has done this a few times since owning her for 4.5 years now.
Twice I remember. The noise stopped after a couple minutes.
Once the noise went away, and the engine got up to operating temp., I beat the snot of her.
Noise has yet to return.
Not saying this is the answer, just worked for me.
And I did have a warranty.
Keep us posted...
Mike.

There are members here and on CVN that live in your area that would be more than glad to help diagnose your problem before you spend big bucks. All you have to do is ask. I bet they respond.

Did it sound like this? Mine and Takedown's have had this going on since middle winter. All seems fine and a real pain in the keyster to locate. It will be going in the shop here soon.

Shure sounds like the starter getting hung up, or a tensioner?

I second the hung starter in the video.

Unfortunatly, I am on my computer at work and I can't see or hear the video but I do know that the mechanic did mention tensioners as one of the parts that I needed. My 04 MM has about 72,500 miles on her and I do have the factory oil pressure gauge. It usually reads about 62.5 psi. I was just curious as to how I can locate any MM owners on this site, that are in my area, that can help me get to the bottom of this. thanks for the help

FYI... the factory oil pressure gauge will ALWAYS read 62.5lbs.... It's FAKE.
Get a real one.
BTW... check the forums for Sunshine State Marauders.......

I heard that this problem is the chain tensioner's. After an oil change check the pan after carefully draining it so you can check for plastic residue in the pan. My marauder just starting to make a little noise and when I checked the oil pan sure enough small bits of plastic in the drain pan. Problem is it will clog the oil pump pickup if enought gets to it. GM cars had plastic coated timing gears and when the plastic wore off it would clog the screen. I am hoping to pull it apart soon to inspect further. I also heard they have an updated tensior available. Good luck!

Bring it out to the Towers Shop one Friday night, and get there early so it can cool down real good, and then we could all ccompare noises.

I brought my car to the dealer for this SAME EXACT NOISE.
After they told me the convertor shield was loose and they tightened it for me, I walked outside and started the car only to hear the same noise again. I called a tech over and he tried to tell me it was the belt and the tensioner and to leave the car.
I got a call the next day that it was the Starter and they were going to replace it under warranty.
Its been 2 years and no noise since the replacement.

To be even more precise, it's a very small peice of magnet rolling around inside the starter. I removed the small chunk a couple days ago and all is perfect.

OK gentlemen,
After a year of dealing with this issue and so many differrent diagnostics and quotes I finally got my local mechanic who has been in the business for 25 years, to go under my engine and pull apart the timing system to find out the problem. It was the timing chain guide that was causing all this noise and headache!:mad2: The plastic was worn of off the guide and the timing chain was eating away at the guides metal base cuasing a loud clicking noise at startup. But once the oil would get to the chain it the sound would go away wich explains everything. the best part is that my motor did not have to be pulled and it was only $400 wich is great compared to the cheapest quote I got for this type of job wich was $800 plus parts. So this problem has finally been fixed.

That's great news! Nice when it's an easy fix. Keep that mechanic's number too. ;)
