What would cause the speedometer to just stop working ?

Do all of the other gauges and lights work on the dash? If the whole instrument cluster is out, look for the fuse.

Otherwise its most likely either the speed sensor, the speedometer gauge itself, or the wiring in between. You should be able to go to Auto Zone and have them put their computer on it and take a little trip around the parking lot. If their computer can see the speed then the problem is probably the gauge. If their computer cannot see the speed sensor readings look towards the sensor itself or the wiring. It could also just be a dirty connector.

When you say speedo sensor where is it located & what might the cost be ?

I think ours is on the transmission near the driveshaft and will probably run you like $45 bucks at the dealer.
