View Full Version : "O" Pinion on the pinion seal (Driveshaft issue?).

I might be way off base here, but from reading in different forums, I've put 2 + 2 together and think that there's a problem.
From what I've read, it is highly suggested that the driveshaft be replaced if either the gear ratio or the rev limit is raised. It has been mentioned that our driveshaft itself is the reason that the MM top speed is as limited as it is. With 4:11's or higher, I've read that we shouldn't exceed 90 MPH. Could the stock driveshaft be responsible for pinion seal failures? I'm at 22,000 miles. I don't drive fast (often), but I rev this beast to red line every single day. These cars are not doing 6,000 RPM's at 115 miles per hour, but that's where mine shifts at when WOT. My driveshaft sees these kinds of engine RPM's a dozen times each day.
Any input on this?

Your driveshaft will experience high revs only in high (4th) gear.

6,000 RPMs in 1st/2nd/3rd gear does not make the driveshaft spin 6,000 rpm.

In fact, if you were to hit 6,000 rpms in 4th gear, the effect of the OD ratio would reduce the driveshaft rpms to about (guessing) 80% of 6,000 rpm.

Hope I stated this correctly (and clearly).

Makes perfect sense...the transmission is letting the engine rev higher. If the driveshaft were spinning as fast as I had thought, I'd have been doing 180. Duh ;)
Oh well, I guess that I was just "lucky" with my pinion seal, but it's still a concern that it went at 24,000 miles.
Thanks!!!

With 4:10 gears, 120 MPH in 3rd gear = 6000 drive shaft RPMs

SergntMac you are right on the money again. I have 4:10's and at 120 mph I started to vibrate noticeably. I need to replace the stock unit badly.
