WTF. I thought I was buying a quality American made vehicle, a vehicle of my dreams, a high powered, quality made, have your cake and eat it to type of vehicle. I thought things would be cool. Little did I know that When I bought it that it would come loaded with TSB's like a bad "LCM, Axle failure, wheel alignment gremlins, power window failures, power pedal failures, bad drivers side head causeing smoke on start up (38,000 miles)all of my pulleys have gone bad and have had to be replaced, replaced my motor with a low mile 44,000 mile motor, Have I missed any thing????????And now my battery light has come on:mad2::help: so if any want to chime in please do so.
When my light comes on, is it due to a bad alternator or a bad battery? I will go to my local FLAPS and have them check my alternator and my battery which is only 6 months old, and has 800 cold cranking amps. It should not be bad. Have there been things(TSB's) on alternators that go bad ? Any thing else I should look for ? I did pop the hood and check the belt and the wiring and all looks as it should. I am at a loss.... I have never had a car cause me such grief, if it weren't for the fact that I have another year to go on payments and a three year note on the motor I would seriously let it go over a cliff.-
Ok I am off my soap box. :soapbox:
Any help willl be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

I would............. but....... that got replaced by a BOOST gauge.:D
So any way all I have is a light to to tell me things aren't working well....
Keep the suggestions coming.................. I would rather fix things myself like I did with the LCM fix. lots cheaper that way.
Rick
Thanks for the good suggestion Zack.

Take it to Advanc or Auto Zone, they'll hook up a meter to it and tell you if it's the battery or alternator.
Sorry you're having problems. Wife's has 140k, never any major issues. The Lincoln LS we traded in on it, now that's a whole 'nother story.

Talk about some bad luck! Am I the only early 03 that has nothing wrong but axles? The things I hear about others scares me about reliability. Sounds to me like you are gonna be purchasing an alternator.

Sorry I do not have any suggestions but I did want to let you know that I feel your pain. I didn't do enough research on my 04 MM before I bought it used at 54,000 miles. My wipers went crazy, my lights went crazy (lcm), my belt tensioner had to be replaced and now I have this crazy clicking noise at startup wich I can't figure out where it's coming from or what's causing it. Everything else has been relatively minor. the tire alignment pisses me off too because the tires don't wear down evenly. All this and I haven't even had the car a year yet. And after all this I still love my MM. :lovies:

You should read some of my old posts about electrical problems, I replaced an alternator, only to find out it was a broken wire in the harness. Then a starter to find it was a broken ground wire, and a cops relay.

Marauders are like Harley's
They look good and everyone wants one, but to own one, be ready to have your wallet stolen! Between mods and maintenance, it is like having a growing child that is always sick

I had the red light of death on my dash when my alternator went. Check there.

They said to check my diode fuse to???????? A what, and where:dunno: :banghead: And last but not least does anybody have a good working alternator they would like to part with? Thanks for all the suggestions

Has the alternator been replaced before? Warranty?
Take it to a electric repair shop and maybe they can repair it for much less than a new or remanufactured one...Good Luck!

I don't see how it would get zero voltage, maybe zero voltage increase? But anyhow, go to Home Depot, Northern Hydraulics, Harbor Freight, or Radio Shack. Buy the cheapest DVM (digital volt meter) you can find. Measure the DC voltage at the battery. It should read around 12 volts without the car running. Start the car, it should read higher. Maybe 13-14 volts. Then measure between the negative battery post and the stud on the alternator that has the big wire and insulator on it. If the battery voltage does not go above 12 volts when the car is running but the alternator voltage does, then the fusible link is bad. It is part of the wire that goes from the alternator to the battery. The two squiggly things. If the voltage does not go up at the alternator it still could be something besides the alternator, but it is the most likely culprit.

Thanks for the suggestions, got my phone book out now, looking for repair shops. Wow!!! Got three in this little town. Whoopeeeee!!!!. The pitfalls of living out in the middle of no-wheresville. I'll start at the top and work down.. Auto Zone wanted $200.00 for one with a lifetime warranty. We will see if a repair shop is cheaper.
No, this is the orginal one manufactured in 2002. No warranty.
Are the CVPI ones the same?
This is funky I had an 86 LTD that went to the grave with the original alternator with 230,000 miles. I bought the car new This car has currantly 65,+++.
I checked the ground next to the battery checks out.
I am now charging my Battery up so I can at least drive it too work. I would be driving my 1990 'box' MGM but my daughter wreaked it, sitting in a heap by the side of the house. For sale 'free' you pick up :mad2:.Rhetorical

Some folks have had problems with aftermarket alternators and worked with them for a long time before giving up and getting a Ford alternator and solving their problem. I believe it is a Marauder-specific part. I know the CV/CVPI parts won't fit. '96-'01 Cobra will physically fit but won't work electrically.

I had my local rebuilder do mine, did a great job, after waiting a week for Auto-Zone to make me one, and then it was wrong. The battery light was always on.

Bought mine new . 53000 miles later , it still feels like a new car . The radio died at about 10000 miles and I haven't been back to the dealer since . Only new car I've kept more than a year (that includes an original 455 Grand Am and two Mustang GT's )and I still love it . Can't agree on comparing it with a Harley . That was the summer from hell .
