View Full Version : Wierdest problem ever...

Just as with being the first at anything, #1 blow-thru procharged marauder finally had an issue.
Now this setup was fully sorted out with an HPX MAF, a MAFia and a big ol procharger blow off valve. Dennis Reinhart did an excellent job of tuning and left me with what I swear it the most drivable and responsive procharged marauder out there.
I orginally mounted the blow-off in the left behind-the-foglight area. It was after the intercooler so boost would be instant (not waiting to pressurize the cooler). Plus, it made an AWESOME WHOOOOSH when jumping out of throttle!
Strangely on some mornings (not all) the car would idle rough for a bit. Rarely, it would try to stall if going into boost.
I didn't go nuts chasing the problem. After warm up and some driving it would go away. So what was it?
Last week, since I live on a dirt road and the valve was getting just pummelled, I decided I'd get even better throttle response AND protect the valve by moving it up to right in front of the 90 pipe in which the HPX is mounted. So, within 12 inched of the throttle body is the MAF, the temp sensor, then the BOV. This should make for MAD throttle response!
So I go to take apart the pipes down below... and I get DRENCHED. The pipes are full of water! Suddenly I realise what's been causing my morning drivability issues! Water blowing on my MAF!
But how did it get there?

Turns out, the BOV opening was DIRECTLY UNDER the drain hole for the compressor tub. Water was running directly into the BOV when the car was parked in the rain.
Unfrickenbelievable dumb luck!
So the move commences. Dang! I'm gonna solve so much stuff in one shot! Right!
Wrong.
I move the BOV and now the car wont run. Won't idle. Won't run. Stumbling and bumbling. Crap!
Bad MAF? Tested. Nope!
Bad MAFia? Tested. Nope!
The car runs fine with the MAF unplugged. WTF?
Any guesses?

Moving anything will change the MAF signal. Maybe due to backwash, turbulence, etc? The BOV has to be before the MAF. Open BOV is probably not a great idea. Why? At part throttle, the BOV is open so that's where the air comes from that goes into the throttle body. Unfiltered air.

MAF turbulence. No Kidding. With the BOV so close to the MAF, all it could see was turbulence. MAF lb/min were ALL OVER THE PLACE!!
What to do?
The FIT kit comes shipped with the blow off valve set to wide open. This works GREAT in recirc mode. In blow-thru mode it makes ridiculous turbulence in the pipes. So I cranked down the butterfly to about 3/4 (full is about 3/4 shut, so it's really about 1/2 shut). This smoothed out the air flow to the MAF.
So I drive around a while watching the MAF on the Aeroforce guages. It still gets a bit turbulent after blow-off. Crank it down a turn more and booyah!
The moral of the story is: MAF TURBLENCE IS REAL! I've proved it. The hard way.
So to perfect it, I think I'm gonna make an anti-turbonator. I want to STRAIGHTEN the air, not SWIRL it.
Lastly, for those that have heard the car blow off, Darth Vader is dead. :alone:
The new sound is like a ricer's turbo blow off. It's hard to describe.
Don't ask me for sound clips or pictures. I'm not workin that hard! :shake: And if you need em, you kinda don't need to know about all this because you're not facing it. Tuners and hobbyists alike... MAF TURBULENCE IS REAL!

True, but as long as the car is running, it's blowing.
The idea of having it all so close helps with backwash. Not so much pipe to wash out of.

In heavy rain watter will pull through the radiator, and cooling fan and drench the front of the motor

Rich, forgive the thread 'jack, but I thought you sold your car???

What BOV was it? Was there a way you could have made a snorkel for the BOV and had it dump the pressure to atmosphere higher under the hood someplace?

I tried, but the Marauder Gods wouldn't let us part!

It's a procharger BOV. It was just dumb luck about the placement. And I put it there!
Anyways. The car is running great, now. I SWEAR it's the most throttle responsive and totally predictable centrifugal setup out there. Blow through is totally the answer!

Glad you got it worked out, Brutha...
Always a pleasure to read your posts...

Awesome.
I have always been a fan of blow-thru setups. Venting pressure back into a system at another point seems dumb to me... sounds like it puts stress on other components.
I had a Vortech Cobra with a draw thru setup and I would pop the discharge tube off a lot.
