I went out tonight about 7:30 to spray the lawn (mass dandilion problem) So I hook up this little 200 gallon sprayer behind the JD 262 mower, dump in the week killer stuff and top it up with water.
I tool around the yard (which would take about 5+ hours to mow with just the rider if we didnt use the tractor in the barnyard) and Im spraying, more spraying, its all going good, I get down into the barnyard after about an hour and get into this pretty thick patch of dandilions that are about a foot tall. As Im going along I see this thing sitting in the grass, A few more passes and Im getting closer and I realize its a pair of gloves (possibly OJ's or maybe my dad dropped them out of the truck when he was here the other day) I finally make a pass and Im close enough to them I can reach out and grab them.
Im a big guy (6 ft 4 In and "husky") and Im on this little John Deere 262 mower so grabbing the gloves while still riding is very possible.
I start to reach down for them and they are coming up fast, I lean a little more to the left, kinda lose my balance and grab the wheel with my right hand and keep leaning, I touch the gloves with my outstreached finger and its too much, all the sudden I start loosing my balance.... so what would anyone do, put thier hand down to keep them from falling, naturally, only when your a moving mower, thats kinda more like throwing the anchor out in a moving boat.
My body weight is now on my left hand and it stays planted, and I involentarily start twisting off the mower so I put my left foot down which does nothing more than pull more of me off of the mower.
By now Im thinking.... F***:censor:, and still out of instict to balance myself from being flat out laying on the ground (the mower is driving off by itself still cause theres no seat kill switch on ours) I put my right hand on the ground which does nothing more than eventually pull my right foot off the mower.
Now Im fully off the mower (dont worry, the blades were never on, I was just spraying) and since I was leaning so far over to pick up the gloves than when I "exited" the mower I was way clear of the tires.
So now Im standing there is some kind of weird twister winning position and I think, dam I ok, no harm done, I stand halfway up and and realize "hey that mower moving across the lawn pretty good on its own"
So I take a few quick big steps and catch back up and step right back onto the step of the mower and jump right back on.
I take about 2 seconds to realize what just happened and look back up to the house to make sure the wifey didnt see me cause she would probably think Im about 5 beers over the limit for mowing (and thats alot) but I hadnt even had A BEER.
I start laughing to myself about it and finish the spraying.
I finally decide im done cause the headlights on the mower arnt worth much and I dont wana refill the sprayer again, I put it in the barn and head up to the house and tell the wife the tale of the most gracefull moving dismount of a mower ever.
Shes laughing and says if she was there to see it she probably would have peep her pants.
Just wanted to share, still have a grin because of it. :o
