I'm looking for some knowledge on what exactly is dyno tuning? Can it be done with or with out a chip? Is this the same as buying one of those programmers? Eventually I would like to do some mods, but just the simple ones for now. Any insight would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks

Calvin:
A dyno-tune as performed by FordChip is when Jerry hooks a laptop running his proprietary software to the OBD-II port on your car and re-flashes the ECM with a "base" program. The car is then run on a chassis dynamometer to measure rear-wheel HP and TQ, along with the A/F ratio. Jerry then analyses the resulting info, and makes changes to your car's timing and fuel tables (among other things) according to his vast experience. The car is then run on the dyno again to verify whether the desired results have been achieved. This scenario can be run as many times as necessary until Jerry is satisfied that no further improvement is possible.
This method of re-programming is usually done in lieu of adding a chip. Using "one of those programmers" is a scaled-down version of what a dyno-tune does, as the programmer is usually used to allow the vehicle's tuner/owner to make adjustments without the use of a dyno, and will not give you actual proof of the effects of any changes you make...it's also possible to cause damage to your motor if changes are made too radically or without a good knowledge or feedback of exactly what those changes are doing...this is where the skill and experience of a dyno-tuner, like the guys from FordChip, come in...

RF Overlord,
Thanks for that info. I've been reading for a while and just wasn't too clear. That's a big help. So from your description you've done the dyno tune and a few things from Dennis. Are you pleased? Good increase in HP.

Yes, I'm very pleased with the way my car runs with the FordCHip dyno-tune and the goodies from Dennis...unfortunately I was not able to have a baseline (stock) dyno pull done before all the mods, so I don't know how MUCH of an increase there was, but I do know the car pulls a lot stronger, with better throttle response, and no reduction in MPG...
I'm now waiting for his transmission cooler and cold-air package...I may as well start having my paycheck direct-deposited into Dennis's bank...
