View Full Version : Mounting a laptop in the MM
Does anyone have any info on how the LEO's are mounting a laptop in the MM with the console shifter?
I just got a new laptop, so my old one will get limited use. I am considering putting it in the MM and finding some cool uses for it. Any suggestions?

Park in front of a house and look up porn steling their wireless connection!
Wow. I guess we are turning into cv.net!!!!
Just ask a policeman, they don't bite. Well, the fourlegged ones do....

I had a Jotto Desk hooked up in the MM. It mounts to the passenger seat mounts. I used it to datalog the cars systems.

I use a Gamber Johnson mount in my LX Sport, mostly for GPS functions. Depending on the type of laptop, you may be able to get a port replicator to lock the unit into, otherwise, you will need a universal mount. I use a Panasonic CF-30 for my application with the port replicator.
I have had experience with the Jotto product, it's not bad, but not what I feel rugged enough for a harsh environment, i.e. the car. Their consoles are great, the computer mount is not as well built IMO.
That said, you will also want a power adapter, LIND makes a variety, they are around $120 or so.
Anything else I can answer, let me know...

What won't??
FWIW, ram-mounts are junk, a lot of plastic.
All mounts will fit in a MM, most will even look pretty good, as with anything, it's going to be give and take, you will be giving up passenger comfort, no matter what.
Thanks for all the replies. (even the porn ones were funny :) ). It's not something I am hell-bent on doing, but I will check out the links and if I find something that works out pretty cool, I will let y'all know!!
So far the policestands one look the best. My neighbor's garage services the town fleet. When I get back to town I will check out one of the cruisers.

Jay,
You want the type that go to the seat bolts. You'll also want an adapter for 12V to 120 or from 12V to laptop (targus makes 12V to laptop).
You will give up seat adjustability and passenger space. Lastly, there's nothing really practical a laptop can do that a blackberry and a F90BT can't do without cluttering up the car...
Good to see you around, my friend...

..........
beware that many computer LCD's are useless in a car without a screen glare filtre.
Have you seen the tint on my car? :)

If you want to look at mine at the Safford LM show, this is what I've got. 100% metal (very strong!); same as the laptop mount for the Crown Vic (screws to the seat bolts) (search for RAM-VB-106-SW1 on the RAM site). You can get different arm riser sizes and different offsets, so it stays out of the passenger's legs.
Mine also has the "Remove-a-Pole" so I can throw the thing in the trunk when I don't need the laptop. Search for RAM-VB-REM1. I got the short riser, since it rises up under the scanner head (at least until I move the scanner head to the center of the dashboard, where the clock would've been if I didn't have a 300B - this summer's project).

On my walk home from work tonight, I noticed a few parked police cruisers w/ out any LEO's in 'em; they had Pana Toughbooks mounted, no way in h*ll a "plastic" mounting solution could support one IMHO! Just my 0.02¢

You can get a universal car charger, that plugs into the cigerette lighter and it has a standard outlet, I.E you can plug in anything, a phone, laptop, ipod, etc and they are only around $40 bucks.

You may as well throw $40 out the window. I have seen countless police chiefs that have tried to save money going that route. They all wind up with a LIND adapter.
Will the $40 throw away work for a little while, yes. But if you want something that will last the life of your computer, LIND is the answer, I use these in fleet vehicles, they take a beating, and 5 years later, they still work.

I'm not sure what brand/model the police used in my car when it was an undercover car, but, this is where they left part of the gimbal.
