View Full Version : Water to blame for bad gas from Baltimore stations
WTOP reported
BALTIMORE - Don't always assume you are pumping good gas into your car, or you could find yourself in the company of some local residents who were left sputtering on the side of the road.
More than a dozen drivers recently got bad gasoline from Oceanic Gas and Hess Gas Stations in the Baltimore area, causing cars to sputter - and even shut off - after filling up.
Steve Ladd, a manager at Ocean Petroleum, says about an hour after the gas was delivered from Hess Corporation, his pumps had shut down and a high water alarm went off.
While the gas that was pumped from Oceanic went undetected for only an hour, no one knows how long bad gas was pumped from Hess stations. Fourteen complaints have been registered with the Oceanic station, with "only a few" complaints focused on the Hess stations, according to a Hess spokesperson.
The spokesperson says water was briefly and accidentally poured into the gasoline, causing the bad reaction.
Ladd says the incident is very unusual. If anyone has had their car damaged due to bad gas, they are asked to call the station right away, as Hess is covering the costs of any damage done

The Oceanic station is right around the corner from me and my wife wanted to fill up the van Sunday morning, the same day the other folks got the bad gas. I always buy gas at either Sunoco or Exxon, not the independents. Finally my wife will stop saying to me, "but it's .02 cheaper here..." Woohoo, save a whopping 30 cents for a tankful of gas. No thank you.
Rich posted up about this yesterday.
This is nuts!
I filled up the VIC yesterday and made sure I got a receipt.
Be careful out there guys, especially you guys with marauders as daily drivers.

I've been filling up at the same place for 2-3 months now since I stopped working one of my part-time jobs. I always pay by card at the pump and get receipts for everything, just in case.

Ya think??? Imagine that ... non-combustible/non-flammable water.

I always pay at the pump and get a receipt just in case! And NEVER at those rinky dink places. I've gone to the Royal Farms "quicky marts" but thats about it. Sunoco all the way.
WATCH OUT FOR WAWA "PREMIUM". IT IS NOT 93 OCTANE.

Descent of them to own up to it.
That has not been my experience with bad gas.

do those stations in question sell ethanol blended gasoline (10%) or are they just selling regular conventional gasoline?

Anything over about 5% water and ethanol laced gasoline separates and the bottom later crud (ethanol & water) will not mix back in!!!:mad2:
The resultant top layer has an unknown octane rating since the ethanol boosts octane......now you really have a mess and LOW OCTANE to boot!!!:shake::argue:
Best bet is to buy from a big name producer or Citgo (NO ETHANOL....PERIOD)!!:shake:
My $.02...FWIW!!

I never heard of Oceanic before but we have a Hess every 5 miles around here.
I collect the hess trucks, I just dont buy their gas. I only use Shell, Exxon, Mobil or Gulf.

I've heard of water injection systems...but that is ridiculous.
