Do you have the rear defrost turned on when this happens?? If you do, its common since the antenna is in the rear window.

Apparently these radios can get iffy. I'm getting mine replaced Thursday for this same reason.
Currently, my radio sometimes decides it doesn't want to work with the CD changer, intermittenly loses FM signal locking ability, and has eaten a cassette-to-cd/ipod adapter and believes that it isn't actually in there. So far, the only reliable part of this radio has beenthe AM receiver, and to an extent the CD tray on the head itself.
I'm getting a Kenwood DPX-503 put in, I'll let you know how it goes if you'd like. They look like pretty sweet units so I'm hoping it'll turn out well. :)

Good excuse to upgrade.

I've looked into this in the past, and it seems that when the radios were manufactured, a bad soldering job inside on one of the boards lets go. I lost all FM reception - after it went through the "should I work today or not" phase. I mentioned this to a place I was going to get it fixed, and the guy knew exactly what the problem was over the phone. He's fixed many of these stock radio before.

I believe what's going is the phase-lock-loop is malfunctioning, and a bad solder job with that sounds about right. I worked for an audio gear repair shop for about six months, but I don't feel competent enough to try to repair it myself. Honestly with the other problems my radio has I don't feel it worth it anyways.
Tomorrow's the big day for the new install.... :)
Mine seems to have developed this problem in the last month.

Even more of a reason to crack open the radio and go at it with a soldering iron...

I know that for the cost of a replacement radio these days, you can replace the original deck with a pretty good one for less than the repair. Here in Toronto, the repair is about $200 - but a really decent replacement deck is around $100 to $120.
I am choosing to repair (not replace) because I want the factory look, but more importantly, it cuts down on some jack**s breaking in just for my radio!
