View Full Version : Do you have to nudge your shifter into reverse?

Ever since I got my car new almost seven years ago I always had to nudge the shifter to get the car in reverse. I completely forgot about it until my dad drove the car and told me my reverse was broken. I said you had to nudge it and it's always been that way even after the rebuild.

Have your transmissions given you this strange problem?

Yes, started when new. Had the linkage adjusted to cure problem, very touchy adjustment.

Yeah... sometimes I will go to back into my driveway and I am in the middle of the road and the engine revs because it isn't all the way in reverse!

Yeah shifter adjustment. My MM has to be nudged sometimes or it won't engage reverse.

I had my shifter linkage adjusted, when my car was in N it was actually in Drive, and vice versa...explain that?!

And you can quicken the engagement in the tune as well.

You know one of the only pet peaves about my MM is that when I have the Emergency Brake on and put the car in reverse it doesnt disengage the EB, I have to put the car in Drive first to get it to pop the EB off.

Ford's been paranoid since the days when Fords were known to jump out of park. If your car did that, and the parking brake automatically released, you could be chasing it backwards.

Only nudging I have to do to mine is when I put it in park and the key won't turn completely back, nudge the shifter forward, click and key comes right out.

You're lucky you have one with the auto disengage, my 04' doesn't do anything when you put it in drive, and even my 93 TownCar does it when you put it in drive.

But I never had to nudge anything on the rauder..

Had mine adjusted and it works just fine! I kinda miss the nudge.

I have said it before but: Its hard to believe that so many people are affected by the shifter being off a little and live with it. Its real simple to adjust.
1: Turn off Air suspension
2: Raise vehicle(for the bigger guys) and put on jack stands
3: Block rear wheels(for saftey)
4: Loosen 18mm nut on shift selector switch at trans
5: Take shifter out of park and put in reverse(in car) with the keys on
6: Shift transmission into reverse(under car) verifying that the back up lights are on
7: Tighten 18mm nut
8: Place shifter into park(now would be a good time to test it) and ensure it engages correctly(as well as other gears)
9: Take off of jack stands
10: Turn air suspension on.
This should work unless the cable has been previously adjusted, and may require a little fine tuning then

Where exactly is that nut? I need a picture so I don't ruin anything.

Sounds very simple.

Mine does it too.

I remember a few years ago when it was my Dad's car, I was getting ready to take it out for a test drive and thought I broke the thing after being in it for 30 seconds.

I told my brother, "Dad's gonna be pissed...", he laughed since he knew about the required "nudge".

Yeah I have the loose reverse since I got the car. When I shift to reverse I have to push it all the way forward towards "P" for Reverse to engage. When I took the MM in to change the trans fluid the tech told me it was a simple adjustment to the shifter cable so I just lived with it since it wasn't a sign of a malignant trans problem.

One of these days I'm gonna fix it, but I find more and more that I don't mid it, keeps me from throwing it into reverse while still rolling forward probably saving me some wear and tear. Also its my MM's take of the temperamental hyperdrive on the Millennium Falcon. :D
