I'm still running the original plugs on my 2003 MM (35K miles). It's running fine, but I was wondering: At what point are people changing them out, and what is the preferred replacement plug and gap to use?

Pull them out and eyeball them, if they are clean, leave them. I changed mine to NGK(NKG, whateva) at 70 thou, waste of time and money, no change whatsoever. 2 weeks later, went to auto-zone and got factory recommended stocker plugs and put them in. No difference. If you are bored and just want the piece of mind of having new plugs, and want to take parts off the engine to spiff it up a little, go for it. Any time spent under the hood when nothing is broke is a plus.

Not true. The "spring" that connects the COP to the plug isn't the best but it doesn't "have" to be replaced although many of us have gone with the Granatelli connectors. Unless your experiencing an ignition problem, the COPS don't need to be replaced.
Guess which one is the stock one........

^^^what fbm said^^^
Rocket Man, if you don't have a tune, then the preferred plug is the plain old Motorcraft stocker...gapped at .054, just like the book sez.
I may have to recant(?) my testimony. I now clearly remember after changing my plugs, the car fired up almost immediatley. I mean it seemed like I barely bumped the key and VROOM it was alive. It was a double eyebrow raising suprise moment, it started so fast. Other than that, I still feel like changing them out 2 twice in 2 weeks just to try out new and different plugs was a waste of money on my part. Plus side, I have 2 spare sets.

Go with stock if you don't plan on getting a tune anytime soon. If you do then I would get a one stage colder plug along with a 180 degree thermostat.
