Remove the tank? Don't remove the tank? Any tips on making it less of a pain in the ass than it needs to be?

I agree with Rich.

Loosen the passenger's side strap so the tank will drop down just a little bit. You might have to loosen both sides, but the passenger's side is where the problem is. On top of the tank there is an electrical connector you have to get disconnected. Long needle nose pliers, a scribe with a bent tip (I call it a booger-picker), maybe some coat hanger wire, a bit of cussin' and sweatin' and it'll come loose. Lots better than pulling the tank. Probably gotta pull the passenger's rear wheel for better access.

Some folks go for an alternate plan, cut the wires and either solder it back together or add another connector. If you do that, make sure it's a weather-tight connection.

Let the rear axle hang down (car on jacks)
Cut the wiring harness that goes off towards the passenger side and put it back together with a weatherpack connector.
The rest is quite easy and it comes right out, no need to touch a gas tank strap.

Search GT-40.

Funny a search of just GT-40 netted no results but search GT-40 pump or some derivative and a ton of hits come up including your install thread. Great thread. http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=27632&highlight=gt+fuel+pump+install

With all these questions it would make sense to sticky some of these mods that have been so well documented.
