Now what!

Well about a week after finishing the J-mod, my tranny is started to act up....

First for some reason while driving down the road every once in awhile I can smell trans fluid, sometimes the smell is stronger than other times, but it last for a few minutes then goes away.... I've checked the fluid level a couple times,(when hot and in park) right in the hash marks, so its not overfilled. I can't see anything leaking either! It's almost as if it comes through the vents... Then about a week ago I noticed the tranny "hick up" on hard corners/turns, not all the time but it looses power momentarily, feels like you hit a bump. Then last night I was taking a left and it lost power again but for a second or two right as I was in the intersection. Then just as quickly as it died it kicked back in.... not good, is my tranny on its way out??? It also seems as if the shifts are getting snappier than when I first did the J-Mod, and I get the snappy shift at less throttle than before.... ANY IDEAS?

BTW along with the J-Mod I did a filter change and drained the pan/valve body and replaced only that fluid, not an entire flush. I did this as the fluid that was in there had about 80K on it. It was still good looking and didn't smell burnt, but I didn't want to shock the system with all new fluid.....

My tranny will slip after 30,000 miles without new fluid. 80,000 miles on the same fluid is bad.

I am at a loss for helping you, mine went quite well. Any chance of spillage when you filled it? Of course that has nothing to do with shifting however.

In all honesty, at this point, I would start by looking for leaks. It sure sounds like low fluid symptoms and with the smell that might be accurate.

Not to insult your intelligence but you checked it with the car running right? Everyone that has worked on a car has looked over some important detail at somepoint, but it does sound like a fluid problem.

Check for low fluid level.

Thanks for the help so far guys, but allot of what is being asked of me is stated in my post. I have checked the level multiple times, and i think I have about 500+ miles on it now... Still in the hash marks... I know it really does feel like a low fluid issue but she's full..... I really don't think it has anything to do with the J-Mod, but who knows. Tomorrow is my day off, I'll put it on jacks and take a real close look around for leaks... Only thing I can think of is something could be blocking the flow, restricting the amount of fluid that gets circulated, but that's a long shot.... I drove it to work tonight, about a 70 mile round trip and no issues, but then again it wasn't happening every time...

And no, I'm sure spillage was kept to an absolute minimum, even when emptying the pan. And the car was up to temp, (checked after 35 mile trip).

There are a couple of other possibilities and they relate to the filter.

Many times I have seen people not remove the orange rubber ring that is supposed to come out on the filter, but doesn't always, and put a new filter in on top of it. That can allow the transmission to suck air.

Or, I have seen filters actually come loose and suck air even with only ring in place.

Just some ideas.

What type of fluid did you use? I have alway heard that you should only use Mercron, but I can't remember which number. Help me out someone. Was it Mercron V?
