IMO, gimmick.
If you use a good quality standard filter, use a good quality oil, and change oil on a regular basis this shouldn't be necessary.

I run it on my oil filter. The point of having it is that it catches whatever metal particles that are introduced into the oil filter.

It's another cheap insurance item since the drain pan bolt is not magnetic.

Nope. One of the first things I changed.

I've run them on my Harley's from day 1 when they were brand new.I don't have any way to compare what another bike's oil filter contained in the way of ferrous metal bits at the first oil changes but I found what I thought was a lot in both my bikes, and both bikes use Harley's new style oil filter which is supposed to catch the really small stuff,at least until the filter plugs up and the bypass opens.I figured they'd catch the most shavings when the vehicles were brand new and haven't run one in my cars as they've well over 30K miles on them and they should be pretty well "smoothed in" by now and if there are any big chunks of metal the filter will get them but the engine would probably be pretty badly wounded already anyway.
But they can't hurt anything. You may come out one morning to find your car pointing due North though, lol.

I use one, have no idea if they are functional beyond the filters job but hope they will keep the connecting rods from going back up into the engine when my time comes:D Besides I already had all the other mods and was feeling pressure to do something really stupid....know what I mean? Dennis:beer:...Cheese, you really should know that there is no such thing as to many magnets....

Well I think I will get one for my next oil change and then slap a flat one on my transmission pan.

I use them on all my cars. I cut open the filter on my new daily driver's first oil change. I never cut the Marauder filter because I must remove the FilterMag before removing the oil filter.
Also, I use the the HP versions which are almost twice the size of the standard.

Hard to pull off but easy to "slide" off.

I have always run magnets on oil filters..... it catches and holds ferrous metal bits (hardest and most abrasive metal) the filter misses....201,000 miles and the MM still runs like new!!:bows:

If you have an old hard drive lying around you can use the magnet out of it. Been using one on the oil filter for years.

Glockafella and WESTTXPATRIOT, the 4R70W's transmission pan already has a decent magnet in it.

I worked at a stamping plant that made 7" deep steel pans for GM Transmatic heavy duty automatic transmissions (think big motorhomes, class 6 & 7 city delivery, garbage/trash, & dump trucks).
We glued powerful, large, circular, flat magnets in the bottom of the pans, about 1/4 " thick, and the O.D. size of a silver dollar.
