I got the EMP Stuart (short) water pump from Summit Racing.
Any tips on the install?
I'm going to use 50/50 prestone green mix. I'll need 3 gallons right?
Thanks in advance

Burp, Burp, Burp the baby about 3 times after repeated heating & cooling cycles.

Burp it = when warm -- remove cap from coolant reserve, let air hiss out, top it off with coolant.
yes?
Not exactly.
Coolant crossover cap between the front of the heads. 1/4" socket extension fitting on top. If you have never had it out, be berrry berry careful!!!! You can top off from there also. I would take it out (after relieving pressure) before draining.
Having the front end up a little (sloped driveway, ramp) helps.

Why do you say "berry berry" careful? I know not to open up the cooling system when the coolant temp is around 200 degrees.
Black metal cooant tube has a fitting that can be removed? And this fitting is there for this reason of burping?
Yeah?

With the engine cold, I heated mine up with a hot air gun to remove it. I didn't go crazy, I just warmed it so it felt hot to the touch but didn't burn me.
I twisted three 1/4 inch socket adaptors trying before I heated it.
I think the procedure is to remove a heater hose to bleed some of the air. Add coolant until it appears at the heater hose, then connect and finish adding until it's full. I then filled the overflow tank and never had any problems.

Yes. it is right on top of the tube. It can be easily stripped and may be hard to get out the first time, as Wires stated.

When I had the coolant replaced at my oil change place I simply told them to remove the fitting and add the coolant there worked jest fine. As has been metioned elsewhere it is the highest point in the system so it just makes sense to use it .
If I recall correctly there was a post by ZACK who spelled it out that I printed and took to mech.

Ok I loosened the metal cap on the top of the coolant tube and it will come of easy tomorrow when I plan to do it.
I have printed a complete owners manual, not sure if it shows where the thermostat is?? On my Crown Vic it was on top of the intake.
Why do I want to raise the car in the front?
I have a small crappy compressor--is there a method I could use to push all of the coolant out? e.g. plug it up into the top metal tube and let it push it all out of the block? Will this work?
I should have done the evenflow mod too at this time. Ahh well.
Thanks Guys.

You raise the front of the car so the coolant flows back into the crossover tube and into the engine.

+1 ^^^The air heads to the highest point....the crossover tube is the highest point then fill it there so all the air is out of the system....if you have air in the system you will have problems. That is why you should have the front end of the car higher than the rest of the car.

Well I got it all installed. The old pump came out easily.
Here's my mini quick howto on this:
(jack car up in front and put on jackstands) I have crappy red ramps but they have too steep grade and I didn't want want to scrape/crack front fascia. Need low-pro ones - didn't do this but it will help get out the air pockets out easier. No air should be in the cooling system.
Unbolt two 8mm bolts holding the power steerting and aux coolant containers push out of way to side.
Disconnect electrical connect and two more 8mm bolts pull out fan shroud
open petlock and drain coolant, open reserve and "blow out" put a clean rag around opening and pushed out coolant. Did the same with the top metal coolant tube access.
Thermostat is halfway down the drivers side in the middle of the coolant hose in a coupling. T-stat goes in upside down. I installed a hypertec 180.
Took a pic of the belt routing with my cell - got a nice new Goodyear Gatorback belt old one was original I think and brittle looking
Leave belt on and take out (4) 10mm bolts on pump cover
Remove belt and then take out the larger pump bolts.
Put big drip tray directly underneath pump assy - I got a flood of coolant even after I thought I got most of it. Pull out the pump. Let it drain. I got about 1/2 gallon more.
Then I pushed my car out of garage and blasted away with the hose, blast out the radiator from back to front. I got a ton of bugs and "clag" out/off of it and washed it good. Totally easy with shroud out.
Pushed car back into garage (harder!) Then I cleaned the engine cover and all pullies with WD and rags etc, all bolts, cam sensors etc.
Light oil on new pump gasket, install tight but not too tight ( I didn't torque either)
Replace shroud, install new belt, put everything back.
Burp, Burp Burp. This is what you want to do:Filled with coolant. Ran for 2 mins. Remove top coolant tube access, top off. First top off took about 3 pints I think. Repeat, did this 3 times before top metal coolant tube wouldn't take anymore. Used a cutoff funnel and Prestone 50/50 (I needed 2.5 Gals for this) Made sure res was topped off to high cold mark.
I swear it feels smoother, better, runs a touch cooler as I did install a 180 but overall the pump is very good quality and I wasn't sure when my coolant was last changed. Engine is clean pullies are clean and oiled with a new belt.... So my MM cooling system is better than good now, and ready for the hot temps of August. Plus I gained about 6 ponies. Emp takes 3 - Electric pump on MM shows gain of about 10
I need to get some low-pro ramps.
Thanks to Blackened300 and "Magnidat"? for their orig write up with pics.
