View Full Version : Clean Oil Off Insulation Under Hood

Oil sprayed over the entire inside of the engine compartment (described in current thread "Kenny Brown Cars-Help!").

1. How would do you get the film of oil on the insulation between the hood and top of the engine off?

2.How would you clean the engine? Steam or wet detergent wash at a low pressure using a pressure washer or what else?

3. I now have a hole where there is no insulation that was caused because
of the very low clearance between the insulation and the alternator attached to my Vortech supercharger. What would you suggest?

John, I love Simple Green. You may be able to remove the liner and spray it with that and then hose it off.

The engine compartment also. The only issue could be the coil covers. Make sure they are sealed good, that way you lessen the chance of water fouling the spark. I've used our lower pressure, pressure washer on the engine with good results.

The hole? I have one too from my upper pulley....when I had the larger one.... I'm still thinking of a fix. Thought about pop riveting a nice piece of polished aluminum there.... for a mirror, you know?
It'd be easy with the liner off for cleaning, just mark the placement before you remove it so it looks right.

Thank you very much for the comments.

I know about Simple Green.

When you get the fix for the upper pulley, let me know.

How easy is it to remove the liner?

It comes off with the round clips that you'll see all over it... they liked to break on me, so I got new ones when I put a new liner on.

I'll try my suggested fix for the hole in mine when I get the hood back on.

No more holes.... I have a smaller upper pulley now!

For the clips go to your FLAPS and get GM  retainers. They stay on better.

P/N: 45713, Qty-3, Body-Tite! - GM & universal.

These are the ones I want even if it is GM.

For the engine:

With engine cold:
1. Spray generously with Simple Green.
2. Wait five minutes.
3. Rinse generously with garden hose using only your thumb to create pressure spray.
4. Start engine, let idle for five mnutes.
5. Shut off engine, use clean rags to soak up small puddles in places that didn't dry on their own.

Repeat a couple more times if needed, remember to have engine cold first..

This is what I did. I just cut out a square and took vacuum/fuel line cut it on 45's (by eye, this was just a really quick solution before a car show), slit it long ways, and folded the pieces over the liner.
P.S. Hows the liner look with a quick pass with flat black? It was starting to get nasty looking, so I did that at the same time.

I don't think that you will have much luck cleaning the insulator pad. It's just too fragile. Get a new one from a dealer (to save in shipping) and treat it with a 3M type product to make future clean ups easier. As far as the motor goes, I use a diluted APC and a series of brushes that I have collected over the years to clean the motor and engine compartment as well as possible. Then I go to the coin-op, cover my K&N and electrical boxes with HD foil and give it a through wash. To finish up I use CD2 to coat everything under the hood. Let it dry according to the directions and do a final wipe down with a MF cloth and get rid of any pooling of the product.
