View Full Version : Assistance needed... AC; low voltage

I have a few things I need some help with...

The first item is my A/C stopped blowing cold, but not all togeather, intermittently... I read up on this in the forums and it seemed to be that the clutch plate was bad, since if I went WOT it would kick on most of the time...

I had it replaced and it is doing the same thing, (I took it to the dealer because I don't have the plate to hold the assembly, nor the shimms to gap it correctly, I don't think they gapped it coorectly so I am going to take it back...

I also was experiencing low voltage intermittently, driving on the highway and only getting 11 volts or so, and twice dropped down to 8 and accessories shut off...

I ordered a new 200AMP alternator from DB, and installed it....

The alternator would work fine at speed, (13.5-14v) but at a stop/ idle it would only read 12.5 volts or so, and then it dropped to 11.5 all the time and then quit... all within a week. (I have the scan gauge, so I get a good reading).

They sent me a new one and I have not installed it yet, I am going to call and ask about the pully situation.

The first one had a standard pully instead of the clutch pulley. Now the replacement one (which they sent overnight, which was really stand-up) has a 2.5" standard pulley instead of the 2" standard that the first one had... still not the clutch pulley.

The replacement also seems to have a light dent on the rim of the pulley, it does not look like the belt would be compromised though, but the pulley seems to wobble just a hair when I spin it... the first one did not...

Problem or no??

I also just noticed that the tensioner is kind of pulsating or moving back and forth just a bit at idle... I replaced it once before about a year and a half ago, right after I had the novi kit installed by DR. I am guessing that it is bad.

So, my questions are:

1. Is there anything else that you guys think might be going on here?? related or not? Am I missing something that could be causing all of this?

2. Does the clutch pulley really matter?

3. Should I worry about the pulley on the new/ replacement from DB (different size/ slight dent/ slight wobble..)

4. Is the tensioner likely bad or something else?- belt does not seem to slip, shoud I replace it? It is only about a year and a half old...

5. Intermittent A/C-- Any insight?

I am planning on replacing the tensioner, installing the alternator with out the clutch pulley and if the A/C is still intermittent taking it back to the dealer to double check the spacing on the clutch plate... (I checked it and it seems incorrect).

I appreciate any comments/ ideas..

Thanks.

I had a grounding issue that caused the voltmeter to read low, then it stopped working right at the door of the dealership all together (Whew)!

This is actually the 4.6 DOHC (out of my 04 MM) with the novi 1200SL air-air kit in my 04 CV Sport...

DR did the swap a few months ago, and did a great job and at a good price...

I had everything swapped, trans, long tubes, control arms, new gears (3.73's) etc... The only difference is the badge on the grill and trunk.

I have had the novi since Feb 08 and almost 50K on it. The motor has 120K on it and running strong. I am only running 8-9 pounds of boost which nets around 405 RWHP... I was at over 450 in my MM with 4.10 gears and a tad more agressive tune.

I checkd all the grounds...

I made all new 4 gauge battery wires, to Alternator, ground, main fuse box, etc...

I'm not up on the electrical and electronics stuff in the MM's as much as a lot of people here but I can tell you the 2 1/2" pulley will turn the alternator at lower rpms than the 2" diameter pulley and will turn the alternator at slower speeds than the smaller pulley, fine for high speed stuff but at idle you may have more issues with alternator output.
I wouldn't use a bent, wobbling, or dented pulley, specially in a high performance car as you'll chew up belts or throw them.

I spoke with Rob at DB, he said that either pulley is fine, the smaller one will put out more power at idle, (which was my guess) and is what I want, so I am going to swap it. I will see it that eliminates the very slight wobble...

Anybody think the clutch pulley is a must?

Any help on the other stuff???
