:stupid:
For reasons I am not proud of or want to go into, we bought a 2003 300A black marauder new in 2003. It has 5524 miles on it because it has sat idle in the garage for the last 4 1/2 years, tabs expired etc. Anyway, I need to change the oil and based on the Ford recommended wss-m2c-153-h, I looked at the local hobby store and found all kinds of oil. Some had that number others did not. Castrol and valvoline 5-20 had the number, but there are blends, straight synthetic, and regular styles. I am a little confused what to use. The motorcraft oil is gone(?) or dealer only.......geez, what does everyone use, or does it really matter. I would like to pick up where we left off and drive this car again. Thanks.....

Well mobil one 0-20 or 5-20 been working for me for over 6 years jest fine.
Meets or exceeds Ford specs.

drive that thing but if as you wrote it has been idle for 4.5 years you might consider changing all the fluids.

Ive found the dealership can do a straight oil/filter change cheaper (and just as fast) than the local jiffy lube (or similar). I like the Motorcraft 5w20 blend.

The oil you choose is dependent on how you drive and your pocket book.

You only drove 5,000 miles in 5 years or 1,000 miles a year. Synthetic oils do not break down as quickly as conventional oils. Multi-weight oils have synthetic additives in them and straight weight oils often do not have synthetics in them.

If you use full-synthetic oil you can change the oil at 5,000 miles or every 6 months. If you use conventional oils you should change the oil at 3,000 miles or every 6 months. If you hot rod or drag race use full synthetic and change the oil frequently.

If you want to save money and do not hod rod or drive alot conventional oil is the money saver. But do not be dollar wise if you are going to race - use the best you can.

Use the best quality oil (5w20 or 5w30 weight) you can afford and change the oil & filter every 5k miles. No need to change the oil less than 5k miles. Better yet get the oil analyzed by Blackstone Labs. They said I could go at least 6k between changes. The 3k oil changes are bogus.

Nothing at all wrong with the factory recommended Motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend. After letting the car sit so long I would be more concerned with the fuel.

Thanks for all the great input! I considered getting all the fluids changed, maybe best to let a dealership have their way with it. Fortunately, we did put some Stabil in the tank. Still smells like gas back there. But....I still should be shot for letting that car sit like that...............

Cars have sat much longer than that, I wouldn't be too worried about it, and kudos for using a fuel stabilizer. Get that thing on the road!

Make sure your tires aren't dry rotted. BTW, RP + Napa Gold = :D

. . No need to change the oil less than 5k miles. . . .
He put 5,000 miles on his MM in 4 years. Autos need to have the oil changed periodically as moisture can attack the oil and then you have sludge problems.
Check out the Lexus 400 SUV with their sludge problems for a laff! 40,000 miles and Lexus motors ruined due to oil sludge! Jim

But I have always added ZMAX to the oil and gas after every oil change once I saw a real time demo of how it works.
At my dealer they charge me $35.00 for my oil changes and then it's another $30.00 for the ZMAX kit.
I put very little milage on the car but have always done the oil changes at 3,000 miles and if I don't put that many on it before the next winter then I do an oil change before she goes into storage.

But if your car has been sitting around that long I would sugest changing out the Tranny fluid and the Antifreeze as well.
Might even be a good idea to change out the rear end fluid just to make sure everything is cool.

Just remember over time Antifreeze becomes corrosive and starts to leave heavy deposits in the cooling tubes of the radiator.

If a car has sat for a long period of time you should pull the fuel pump relay and crank the car over for 15 sec or less to get the oil circulating and parts lubricated. Then put the relay back in and start it up.

Had a teacher who's favorate saying was "Lubrication is the life of all moving part's lose that and you might as well rebuild and start from scratch because the damage is done".

Another words you can never be too carefull when it comes to your car if you want it to last.

Flush out the brake fluid as soon as you see a color change in the masters resivoir.

LeoVampire, I like the idea of disabling the fuel pump and cranking the engine to get it lubed after sitting for 6 months. Thanks!

All right, I'll bite. What is ZMAX?

All right, I'll bite. What is ZMAX?It's useless snake oil, literally. The FTC determined that it's nothing more than coloured mineral oil. It ranks right down there with ProLong, DuraLube, MotorUP, and Slick 50.

What makes it unique is that it's offered as a 3-pack; one each for the fuel, the transmission, and the crankcase. Trouble is, they're all the exact same thing, just with different colouring.

+1.....But since I dont like to take anyones word for it (no offence RF), I like to do my own research....

http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2001/02/zmax1.shtm

Summary of the link: just like RF said it is all mineral oil in all 3 bottles, PLUS even their own studies showed double the bearing corrosion of just motor oil alone....

Figured if there was a way to help lubricate my engine more I would go for it but never got a kit that included the tranny fluid because it was for manual tranny's not automatics.

I figured between the demmo I saw in person and the fact Carl Shelby endorsed it as well it was a good thing to add to the car.
