View Full Version : Marauder vs. Impala SS

I'm currently driving a 1996 Impala SS and wondered if anyone in the group has had an opportunity to spend some time in both the Impala and Marauder? If so, what are your thoughts? Time and mods in the Impala SS have made it a ton of fun, but 80K miles is starting to loosen up the daily driver.

Thanks,
Blackcat

Quite a few people on here had SS's, a couple still do.

I bet you get a response.

I have ridden in both and could not overcome the general feeling while driving the Impala that chevys suck, so I couldn't judge both fairly, I like Ford products and felt like I would be going gay if I stayed in the Chevy

I also have a 96 SS with Borla, K&n, chip, MY Marauder would not begin to stay with it, now with 2K miles, Reinhart chip, 4:10 gears I would say its about even, haven't had a chance to run em together since mods to MM.. The SS that I drive daily has 67K miles, I also have one with 80K miles for sale if anyone has any interest...

I have a '96 Impala modded, it is a daily driver, the LT1 engines are barely being broken in at 80,000 miles. Mine has 92,000 on it, no smoke, no leaks, just put that right pedal down and feel the torque!

It treats me very well. Sure GM's interiors ain't great, but what the hay...
I must say that the Marauder's suspension is great, I thought it handled fabulous when I test drove one.

Anyone besides mensrea want to race, just let me know

I had my '96 SS from new, and both being stock, the SS blows away the MM from an "off the line" standpoint. However, after reaching speeds to about 45 to 50, the MM will catch and out pull the SS. 1/4 mile runs are just slightly quicker with the MM. But, my SS pulled great well past 125, even up to 140 with no problem. I can't even get that fast with the stock MM (limiter). Yes, with the chip and gears the MM will outperform the SS. But that is with the SS being stock with no additional cost of mods. I had 71K miles on the Impala when I sold it recently, and it still ran like new. I hope the MM holds up as well.

10-4 on the holding up as well as the SS, I have two, one with 67K and one with 80K and they both run better then the day I got them. Enjoying the MM but it has a large pair of shoes to fill.....

Beat where on the street? I'm talking 1/4 mile at the strip. You bring your Maruader on down to the strip, I doubt you will be beating me out on the top end. And who has a bone stock SS?

It's not so much the car as it is the driver, that's all.

Only difference I see in track racing vs. street racing is in street racing the car is not babied for the run. It's true power with a hot engine, not cold, preped for the conditions. If anything, I'd say a measured and known quarter mile drag on the street is a true test of performance. But hey, we all have our $0.02 on the subject...

i agree want counts is on the street, but i am a hell of a driver:D i mostly drive 10 sec cars.

How is track racing "babying" the car. Revving and shifting at 6200 RPM or so on a basically cold engine and tranny is not babying. Sure street racing is fun for bragging rights, but it's also dumb if you get caught.

My 2 cents, stick to the track...

That's what all scrub guys say when a Ford beats them.

Like I said, babied for the RUN, not during the run. Yes, you can tach 6200 on a street race, no difference there. I'm talking making sure your motor's nice and cold, tires are warmed up and balanced to the proper temperature, carb's (if you have one) balanced for the climate conditions, fluids checked, extra weight pulled, etc, etc... But as for the actual run itself, they SHOULD both be performed the same, with all safety percautions taken. The only difference lays with the lack of preparation of the motor in street racing.

RCSignals,
So I'm a scrub, bring you Maruader on over here I'll show you what my ride can do. No one said anything about brand names here. I like all cars.

Hey LincMercLover,

Some of us don't baby their cars, as you mentioned. I will admit I change my rear tires, though :)

But all this weight removal, icing the intake, etc, is kinda wimpy on a street car. If I know I might have some races on the street, I'll also change tires before I go, so my track times are pretty close to my street times.

I have yet to meet up with a Marauder on the street or track. They don't seem all that popular here in Central Florida, but there are a hell of lot of Grand Marquis and Crown Vics. Of course, none of them ever want to race.

The most cars that seem to like racing from the Ford group are always the Mustangs, and especially the Cobras, and I have a lot of fun with them.

I agree SS. Unless you're in heavy competition, there's no need for the "babying." I'll probably go to the track just to get my numbers, so I DO know what my car runs. If anyone finds me up there and wants to race, I'm open to the challenge. As for on the street, I have no doubt I'll get caught up in a few red light runs. Everywhere I go with the car people rev at me, want me to do rolling 30's on the highway, burnouts in parking lots. I have to ignore them right now, that is untill I get my motor properly broke in to my liking, which won't be very much longer! Then the fun begins! :D

I own a '95 Impala SS and my MM has 5K miles. The Impala is much faster than the MM. But my SS has a K&N cold air intake, a stage 2 JET chip, and Flowmasters. It will melt the much wider SS's tires effortlessly. I'll let you know how they compare after I do some mods to the MM. I'm thinking I might be able to swap the K&N induction kit onto the MM. The SS is now my wife's car, she'll never notice.

I think cutt's 14.7 is quicker than any of the numbers the Impala SS put down when it came out. Stock of course.

have you raced the SS against the MM or does it just feel faster?if you have 2 good drivers there i'll bet a cool MM will beat that SS.i'll admit the MM must be cooled off to make it a good drag race.
