View Full Version : Question ... about Supercharger Whine ...

Okay ... so, I've never been a fan of supercharger whine. For me, it just sounds like the car is going in reverse. However, I love the sweet whistle of a turbo charger. It reminds me of racing my father's 86 Buick Grand National. It sounds like the smooth whistle of a commuter jet.

With that said, it looks to me like a centrifigul type supercharger would make more of a turbo whistle as opposed to a gear whine that a roots-type supercharger makes (especially with the cog type belt). Is that true ... or does it make just as much gear whine??

Ideally, I would like to hear the exhausts with maybe some whistle from under the hood (along with that glorious sucking sound). What I don't want to nail the car and it sound like I am driving in reverse without gear lube.

Finally ... this is for more than the Marauder ... It is for Mustangs too.

Nothing personal... but I feel sorry for you.

My Trilogy equipped Marauder has been likened to a "screaming freight train" by people I have passed by....

You should hear it in the PA Turnpike Tunnels....

Oh the HUMANITY!!!!

I'm not arguing about the power. A Terminator Cobra is ridiculously fast, but IMHO sounds like crap. It sounds like some idiot trying to see how fast he can go in reverse. Some people love that sound. I prefer the sound of turbo whistle. It's a simple question really ... do centrifugal units sound more like turbos and have less gear whine??

I was talking about the sound also..... It does not sound like crap to me.

Meet up with some of the local MM.net owners with both Trilogy and ProCharger/Vortex kits for an informed decision.

I like the whistle my ProCharger makes at idle and the whine a roots blower makes under throttle.

My Vortech V3 sounds more like a turbo, I think. But you can still hear some slight gear whine at idle when the hood is up. Under throttle, though, just whistle.

IMO, I would not base a 4-6 k investment on sound. I think the preformance you are looking for would be my first place to look. I believe there is people who do/done turbo kits for these cars?

Reminds me a little of the gear whine in the old days when some of us decided that gear drive, instead of timing chain, was the way to go with pushrod engines, so we could dial-in our cam. ....so long ago :geezer:

Interestingly there were some guys who had a faux setup to approximate the gear noise. Funny how things change, but, to each his own, and welcome to whatever turns you on, but there is some history there. :)

I like the Trilogy Twin Screw it sounds just perfect under acceleration with the stock airbox on and a low gearnoise at idle, just enough so you can hear that there is something cool lurking under the hood.

Also don't forget when choosing a supercharger, you want low end power (Trilogy) it gives the best all-around driveability. (the Twin Screw gives 5psi at 2-2500rpm)

I'm not saying a turbo setup or a centrifugal blower is bad, it just would not be my first choice, based on either sound or power.

My turbo makes little to no noise that I have noticed. Definitely can't hear it over the exhaust at WOT and my exhaust is quieter then most. Sometimes you can hear the blow-off valve, but it is pretty faint.
The belt whine is cool .....for a few minutes.

Actually, the whining sound made by Eaton or Twinscrew blower is not from their gears but rather from the air being discharged by the rotors or screws under pressure.
If the sound from these blowers were from the gears, they probably wouldn't last very long since they would probably self-destruct.
My Whipple makes 20 psi of boost right off 750 rpm idle. The sound that it makes when under boost is mesmerizing! I don't think that it sounds like a manual trans going in reverse at all. That sound is a little more mechanical.
When driving and not going into boost, I can not even hear that I have a blower under the hood and at idle it sounds like a stock NA engine.
When I used to run Procharger D1SC, there was a distinct whistling and a slight bearing rumbling noise at idle and when driving, it sounded like I had a gigantic mechanical engine cooling fan under the hood. That used to drove me insane. But I'm sure somebody else like it like some don't like the whine of the roots or twinscrew.

A Eaton under boost sounds nothing like a car in reverse, You Fail!:bs:

I'm a snail guy and I would agree. The power delivery in my car is very linear and refined, but also somewhat boring, truth be told. And I've also got 4.10's and a 3000 stall. Personally, I think the Trilogy sound is awesome.

Not really - there is an STS remote mount turbo "kit" but you have to fab a ton of stuff. http://oi.b5z.net/i/u/1473169/i/Mustang/smustlaunch.mpg

I can't stand the sound of this car - totally annoying.

Ugh ... the sound of that DTR Marauder is AWFUL. I like the whistle, but that bearing screech sounds horrible.

This is the supercharger whine that sounds annoying to me (sounds like it is going in reverse).

Don't get me wrong ... I'd learn to live with it on this particular car. But if I could have this kind of power with more whistle than whine I'd be happy.

Boy ... I didn't realize that this thread would touch a nerve. :o

Then go for broke and get a turbo supercharger set up. get it right and you'll have a car that will be tough to beat. it is just getting the set up right. last vehical I had seen a working set up like that though was a Semi tractor used on the Bonnoville Salt flats.
