At idle, you could one at a time pull the connector from each coil, meaning the small connector plug at the top, and listen to the engine change. If you get to one that doesn't change, or at least not as much as the others then it's a pretty safe bet you found your trouble maker.

Are you throwing a code? Most decent scanners will tell you which one is faulting.

burt, if you have a bad COP, you should be getting a misfire which would give a flashing CEL. I can come down with my code reader or meet you somewhere in the middle...

What is the best scanner in your opinion? I mean something you don't have to decode or be a rocket scientist to figure out what it's trying to tell you.

This is the one I use, it has never let me down. It also provides datalogging for each fault to further help you diagnose.

Thanks, I'll look into this, If I'm going to be the one repairing this thing, "or my other cars for that matter" I will need this. I would rather not go to a dealer!:bandit:

A hand held tuner should be able to it do also. My Predator has Diagnostics capabilities. I'm not sure if it can be used on other vehicles also though. i already had a Scantron tool from Advanced Auto before I bought my 1st MM. Spent about the same as the one listed by justbob and it is no where near as nice as the Equus.

Bob - Lets try for the 25th next Saturday. Maybe Patriot Square car show ? I did install new spark plugs. It did improve but not perfect. You do have to hear the the exhaust set up on the Stainless Works headers we installed now with the finished muffler system.

That's a sweet code scanner. I just use my XCal2.

I might get my dad that one for his birthday, though.

Not throwing any codes. I did change all the spark plugs used goop on wire terminals anti seize on threads. Results are a bit better. The motor still sometimes stumbles for about two minutes then idles smooth. Could it be my IAT valve ?

If you know someone that as a tech at Ford, take it there and hook it up to the IDS machine.
It will stress test each coil and answer your questions immediately.
A normal tuner or scanner cant tell you if a coil pack is bad, especially if it has not thrown a code.

Bob that would also work best for me. It's a endless guest list every summer living on the sand bar.
