I will try to make this as short as possible.

So about a week ago I notice my air conditioner not really pumping out cold air as I am used to in the automatic mode. So I dropped it a few degrees and that helped a little bit but it still wasn't cooling off like it should.

Today on my way home from the lake it felt like it totally crapped out, it was pumping in hot air. I turned it to MAX A/C and set it to 60 and it was intermittent with cold/hot air.

It's Florida, in the middle of summer... awesome.

I turned it off and used my dual open 50 A/C until I got home... then I noticed a noise. It sounded like roofers hammering nails.

DAMNIT....

I got home, popped the hood and listened for the noise. It started and it scared the crap out of me. Sounded like the inside of the engine was just ripping itself apart. I ran for the ignition key and just as I got there the noise stopped.

Stumped I left the engine run... purring like a kitten (74K miles BTW).

Then the noise started again.... then stopped. I looked around... waiting for the noise to return and when it did... I saw it.

It was the radiator fan kicking on, gaining speed and then it started to make the noise and then shut off.

So the fan is obviously busted and is making the noise. I believe this will also affect the A/C performance while sitting still.

Hopefully a new fan will fix this problem.

Any other insight from you guys?

Your compressor might be toast.

Your compressor might be toast.

Compressor was off and not spinning when I heard the noise.

It's the fan making the noise.

The fan blows/sucks air across the condensor right?

Yes it does. Yes having low flow across the condenser will harm AC performance. I would replace the fan and go from there, you'll probably be okay.

Do I need a "Marauder" fan? or can I use a 2000ish to 2009 Panther car fan?

Compatibility?

nation wide junkyard search. Look for the part, engine cooling fan assy

It shows grand marquis and crown vic from 2003+ being the same, and that relies on the Hollander interchange which is pretty darn reliable. You should be able to find a fan on there too, sort by region and price.

Holy ****. Just searched that site...

For those prices I'll buy a new one from Autozone for $200.

Go to an actual junkyard and take one from a crown vic.
Pay the 20 bucks and use the rest for BEER.

That is what I'm talking about... but I need to find a 2003+ CV.

Calling Salvage yards now.

OK... I pulled it apart and the outer ring that connects the fan blades somehow split and chewed some plastic off the shroud.

Think it would be possible to super glue it back together and re install it?

The fan itself works fine... just the blades got a little messed up.

Junkyard will cost about $20 (not a fan of used parts... but this is just a fan) and a new one is $200.

:/

There is a product called GOOP -- go get some at a hardware store and fix the shroud. Clean thoroughly with denatured alcohol then use the GOOP. Allow at least 24 hrs before re-assembly.

Get a junkyard fan and use the blade off of it. Gluing an important part of your cooling system together? On a nice car like this? really?

$20 fan from a 2003 Crown Vic solved the problem.
