I think I know what I want to look for for a "winter rat" I'm guessing he must have had the psi boosted or something? Anyway here is my story from this AM. Got to work pretty quick. ;)</or>

Dude, I owned an '85 1/2 supra targa turbo. For a small car they are extremely heavy and pretty slow off the line... but when rolling and you get on it they are smooth and scary ass fast. I know I had mine well into the 120's for long stretches of empty road. They are also extremely well balanced so entrance and exit ramps were some of my favorite places to play.
It would make an awesome winter beater if you can find one that hasn't had head gasket issues. The cooling systems on these are ok for easy driving but they heat up pretty quick if you play too rough with them. If the head gasket has been replaced or needs replacing, turn and run.

Oohhh ... don't get me wrong I have been to triple digits plenty of times on the highways. But what you described there sounds like something from Fast and Furious, you will never find me weaving in and out of traffic.
