Hey MM Community,

Had a problem last night with starting my car. The car was running fine, started up fine and the whole nine. Drove a few miles to my friends and turned the car off to go inside. While in the process of locking my car, i accidentally locked/set the alarm with the OEM keypad first then with the aftermarket. Was only in the house for 15min, its about 9:15. We get back to the car and unlock it, everything was fine, the headlights, lights, everything was working normal. I go to start the car, dashboard lights up but nothing happens, try it a few more times, still nothing.:mad2:The starter didn't do anything, heard the fuel pump but that was it. Had enough power to start the car so I knew that wasn't the problem but i tried to jump start the car anyway but nothing. Disconnected the battery, still nothing. Tried to reset the alarm system, still nothing. So at the point I'm like WTF!! and it was starting to get dark. For all you CAM members that know the area, I was in Eastover so i was trying to get the F outta there before it really gets late. So I call my friend who is my personal mechanic:D(works for AAA). He goes through the steps i already tried :shake: just to make sure I guess. So he says, "let me try something", at this point I'm like do whatever you have to do so we can get the hell outta here. He trys to jump it from the starter, that worked but it never turned over to start the engine. So we're like D@MN!!! He thinks of another idea and disconnects the aftermarket alarm system brain, jumps the starter and the engine starts up. 2 hrs to start the F'n car:mad:. At that time its 11:30 so we peel outta there :burnout:. He has a 96 impala. So my question is, was it the aftermarket alarm system that was stopping the car from turning over or something else? The guy that installed the alarm system swears it isn't the alarm system so any input will help

THANKS!!!

It kind of sounds like the alarm system cutout the control module that reads the chip in your key....

Installer said there is no kill switch(which is odd to me ). only a valet switch

Avital is just the entry level Viper (DEI) alarm. I used to install their alarm/remote starters all the time when I worked at Tweeter.

I understand what your saying so don't take it the wrong way. To ME, if an alarm system works, I'm happy:). If its the Avital thats the problem and i can get my $$$ back, how much do you charge to install :D

The only help i've gotten so far is a kill switch, is that it?

Is it a remote start? Check the fuses to the alarm...car too. Also did you try the shifter? The shifter may not been in "P." Is the car starting now? Eastover is not that bad either...lol! Where do you stay maybe we can come look at it.

Sometimes the shifter says "P," but sometimes its not in it....if you know what I am saying. But let me brain storm and get back with you...TBC...

Remote starts will not let the car turn on by the key if it was previously turned on by remote start, and killed (with the brake pedal for example).

Actually, that's not what I experienced with my Town Car. Had an aftermarket remote start installed, and I often forgot to put in the key prior to hitting the brake before putting the car into gear. Always started it back up right away with the key on those occasions. However, I did have an issue after a few years with it getting goofy requiring me to jump the starter solenoid to get the engine started.

Its your alarm. I have a 95 impala and the same thing has happened to me...more than once. I'm actually kinda glad somebody else had the same prob cuz now u helped me. i didnt know what was wrong. but what i had to do was arm the system and manually unlock the doors( activating the alarm) and override the system with the valet switch. Irritating as hell..i know. But after i do that it works fine...until next time. i think there is an issue with the avital engine kill capability.

I have a viper and an avital and they both allow me to restart my vehicles by key if i accidentally kit the brake pedal too early.

Hmm, I had a prestige, and my buddies older viper would not let it start up by key if it was killed.

so it couldn't be the starter acting up?

Starter problem maybe?

I think if it was a starter problem it would crank but not start.

Update...it was a solenoid

I would have to say if your friend disconnected the aftermarket alarm system brain and then the car started, that aftermarket system was your problem.

It's possible that may be a component in your aftermarket system went bad, like a relay maybe?

Has the guy that installed the alarm system even troubleshooted your car at all before saying it isn't it?
