View Full Version : Autocrossed the Marauder!!!

Had a fanfriggingtastic weekend here! Took my sweetie to a Dave Matthews concert in Minnesota on Saturday night-the usual shennanigans with smuggling in wine and food and got reserved seats with 10,000 lakes festival chairs etc etc ...

Got up late Sunday morning and moseyed on over to "watch" an SCCA autocross event at the fairgrounds. There wasn't any cars within 1000 lbs of the Marauder (except maybe a wicked road race prepped vette) but I watched the 1st round of cars (they had 3 groups) go thru and thought "Hell I can run with those boys". The event coordinator was cool enough to allow me to sign up and run even though I missed all the track set up and meetings and such. It was $20 for the SCCA members and $35 for non-members....my sweetie took one look at me and gave me the thumbs up (I am so crazy in love with that woman). They even had a bunch of loaner helmets to use.

The course started with a hard left and then a 120 degree right where yuo had to pretty much ease thru it but then there was a 3 cone slalom over about a 60 yard stretch...then a sweeping 90 degree left...a 40 yard straight...another 90 degree right....short straight then you had a little zig zag left to dodge 2 cones...another long sweeping right and a short straight into a decreasing radius 120 degree...then the fun part- about 120 yards of slalom with 5 cones to dodge and then you had to mash the breaks to take a tight left 90- cross the parking lot for about 50 yards and then finish the course with another decreasing radius right to go thru the finish.

I got six runs in- the first was with one of the organizers who is a serious Road America type Formula Ford pilot....he was awesome and real helpful.
First run was a sloppy 51.548 second mess and each time I got faster and more confident. My last run was a total adrenaline rush and finished at 47.559.

The fastest cars there were a Lotus Vitesse (sp?) and the Formula Ford dude's Mitsibish Conquest TSi (I got to ride with him in that a couple times to learn the course before my group got on the track) and they were both in the 44 second range.

The MM got a LOT of attention...especially after hearing it tear up the course in 1st gear (never got out of first and only hit the 6500 rev limiter on the back end of the long slalom on the last two runs). Out of about 50 cars there I think my times will be in the top 20 or so. I have a few pictures and my sweetie got some video of my runs also. I am clueless how to post them but I can e-mail them to anyone who is more computer savvy than I am.

If you get a chance to autocross your beast, DO IT! It is soooooo much fun to whoop up on lil sports cars and see the WTF look on peoples faces

+1 on that! I've been having such a blast! Lookit what I was running against last week (Classes are based on tire traction rating).

Awesome! Are you running on stock sized tires?

(Me?) Yes, my fronts are actually factory tires. Rears are KDWS as well, same as factory but replaced once. I just manages to finish wrenching my new QA1s, Metcos, Addcos and Willwoods about 10 minutes before I had to drive to the track that evening. (+1 to anyone who wants to do those mods too, it makes a huge difference!)

I'm running stock BFG's on the front that are pretty newish and a fresh set of 255/55 Goodyear Eagle F1's on the back that I just got mounted (Thanks to Doom for posting up on the Tire Rack clearance sale!).

I have a spare set of rims with 90% worn Nitto 420S's (same 255/55 size) that I will run on any future autocrosses. It's not that the Eagles didn't grip well- they felt awesome- but theres a lot of pebbly garbage that gets on the track in the later runs and it seems to really wear the rears pretty heavily. I can trash the Nitto's with a good conscience and just keep an eye out for some decent used race rubber to replace them at the end of the summer.

Yeah those F1s look like really nice tires, just too damn expensive for me in the size I would want (no special discount). Thanks for the answers both of ya's

Thanks. I should have posted about them instead of derailing 03calitejas's thread.

I put up the whole field I was running against - some smaller cars too. The 'Stang kicked my donkey though. It was Supercharged, so even with flat tires it would have kicked me.

Sounds like you had a great time. I did this w/ my Marauder also. Suspension mods went along way. I had stock BFGs on the front. They did not hold up well. Then again, I over-drove them quite a bit.

Excellent! Glad you had fun John!

I tortured my tires at Car Craft, click me (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=55365).

Hey Jeremy

I'm only about 3-4 hours west of the twin cities so keep me in mind if you folks have any meets coming up.

The SCCA folks that organized the AutoX here in West Fargo are doing a couple more events (Sept 27 and Oct 18th). Anyone wanting to come up for it can crash at my casa the night before. I have air matresses and plenty of floor space.

If I email you my pics and video clips, can you post them here?

My 6th run was a bit faster but my pit crew was in the ladies room :)

I don't think it was too bad for my first time ever autocrossing...
