Had a fanfriggingtastic weekend here! Took my sweetie to a Dave Matthews concert in Minnesota on Saturday night-the usual shennanigans with smuggling in wine and food and got reserved seats with 10,000 lakes festival chairs etc etc ...
Got up late Sunday morning and moseyed on over to "watch" an SCCA autocross event at the fairgrounds. There wasn't any cars within 1000 lbs of the Marauder (except maybe a wicked road race prepped vette) but I watched the 1st round of cars (they had 3 groups) go thru and thought "Hell I can run with those boys". The event coordinator was cool enough to allow me to sign up and run even though I missed all the track set up and meetings and such. It was $20 for the SCCA members and $35 for non-members....my sweetie took one look at me and gave me the thumbs up (I am so crazy in love with that woman). They even had a bunch of loaner helmets to use.
The course started with a hard left and then a 120 degree right where yuo had to pretty much ease thru it but then there was a 3 cone slalom over about a 60 yard stretch...then a sweeping 90 degree left...a 40 yard straight...another 90 degree right....short straight then you had a little zig zag left to dodge 2 cones...another long sweeping right and a short straight into a decreasing radius 120 degree...then the fun part- about 120 yards of slalom with 5 cones to dodge and then you had to mash the breaks to take a tight left 90- cross the parking lot for about 50 yards and then finish the course with another decreasing radius right to go thru the finish.
I got six runs in- the first was with one of the organizers who is a serious Road America type Formula Ford pilot....he was awesome and real helpful.
First run was a sloppy 51.548 second mess and each time I got faster and more confident. My last run was a total adrenaline rush and finished at 47.559.
The fastest cars there were a Lotus Vitesse (sp?) and the Formula Ford dude's Mitsibish Conquest TSi (I got to ride with him in that a couple times to learn the course before my group got on the track) and they were both in the 44 second range.
The MM got a LOT of attention...especially after hearing it tear up the course in 1st gear (never got out of first and only hit the 6500 rev limiter on the back end of the long slalom on the last two runs). Out of about 50 cars there I think my times will be in the top 20 or so. I have a few pictures and my sweetie got some video of my runs also. I am clueless how to post them but I can e-mail them to anyone who is more computer savvy than I am.
If you get a chance to autocross your beast, DO IT! It is soooooo much fun to whoop up on lil sports cars and see the WTF look on peoples faces
