View Full Version : I've never had so many problems with a car...
About a week a go I couldn't have been happier with the Marauder, everything was perfect.
Then the temp control went out (see my other topic). Took it into the dealer, no big deal, it was just the blend door controller (or something along those lines).
Get it back today and while driving home I keep hearing a wind noise coming from the drivers side vent. I turn the air off and it doesn't go away. I accelerate and it gets louder.
I pull into my driveway and open the door and hear what sounds like marbles in a metal can every time I press the gas. Turn off the car and restart and it almost wouldn't turn over... Needless to say it's going back tomorrow, but I want to know what the :censor: they were doing to my car!? :mad2:It's bad enough it looks like they went offroading in it...
/rant.
UPDATE: Rattling problem is solved and the car cranks fine... Still trying to figure out where the noise leak into cabin from the the engine bay is coming from. Feel free to toss out suggestions.

I don't think its the car, sounds more like the service. Five years for me and never a breakdown.

Check crankshaft pulley - insure that the bolt is tight on the pulley and pulley does not wobble. Check your other pulleys and tensioner. You may also have dropped a valve seat!
What kind of gas are you running in it - 93? You might have had a dealer test ride in your car that was readily a "joy" ride. Could be detonation?? But, it does not sound good.

justbob, you are correct, I chose my words poorly, I am angry with the service department, not the car.
Anyway, after doing some checking, it sounds like I am just hearing the engine and/or the CAI from the air vent. Is it possible when they were working in the dash they didn't seal something up properly and I am now just experiencing some sort of wind/noise leak into the cabin? It's just a constant hiss, like a fan, but no wind can be felt.
The metal rattle sounds like it is coming from under the car directly below the drivers seat/center console. Could be the exhaust, in which case they will blame my new mufflers, although it was fine when I dropped it off...

If they were working with the air ducts and so forth, then I would say yes, they prolly forgot to hook something back up...take it back.
As far as the marbles-in-a-can sound, could be a bad cat or possibly the heat shield...

If it's a sound outside the car but at your feet, then that sounds like one of your cats gave up the ghost. As for your other problem being the blend door controller, they would have had your entire dash unbolted from the firewall for that repair. Ask me how I know.... I just finished changing out the heater core in my CVPI, and I was thinking of swapping out the BDC, but then I remembered a rule I follow "If it ain't broke don't fix it."

Sounds like you should have gone with an Impala SS!:D

Ugh, not sure what you mean by that! :puke:
Update: Took it back to the dealer. Service manager said he didn't hear anything, so we took it over to the mechanic. He heard it but told me it was normal and I was just hearing the intake through the firewall. I of course said it wasn't normal and it was far noisier than when they worked on it. We agreed to make an appointment to have it looked at again next week.
My biggest complaint is if you had the dash off and a new hissing noise appears don't tell me, "it's normal.":mad2:I mean did they expect me to say, "Oh, ok, guess I never noticed this intrusive sound before today. I'll be on my way then."

Crawl under there and see if something is loose....if they took it for a joy ride...they may have bottomed out on something and knocked the cat or something else loose...if you see scratches or dents under there that may be what happened.
If your car looked like someone went OFFROADING in it when you picked it up why didn't you say anything or complain right then & there???
I would have raised hell!!! :argh:
I was angry and exaggerating... I was just commenting on how it always comes back so dirty no matter how clean I bring it in. Don't read too much into my "Arrggg stupid dealer!" moment please. :D
Anyway, I'll see what they say next week about the dash and go elsewhere for a proper fix if need be. But that will be the last time this dealer sees my car! I'm moving in a week so I guess it was going to come to that regardless!

This is another fine example why I fix my own cars. If I do not know how to do it, I look it up and do it myself. That way there is no one to blame but myself.

^^ Amen. If I can't afford to buy or borrow the tools to fix it myself I can't afford to own it.

Looks like I better learn to do the same...
I just got back from the dealer and they said they had 4 different guys take a look at it and they are 100% there are no noise/air leaks from the engine into the cabin. Yet, the sound is still there.
Any thoughts on where I should begin? To reiterate the problem it sounds like my CAI is in my lap at WOT and there is a constant "hiss" at idle and it grows louder as I press the accelerator... To put it simply it sounds as if there is a hole behind the driver's side air vent into the engine bay.

I may be stretching a bit, but...regarding hissing sounds behind the dash:
I see you have a 300A...does your automatic parking-brake release still work? It's vacuum- actuated.
Do all your HVAC (defrost/floor/vent) functions work? They're also vacuum-actuated. (except for the blend door)

I'm more than happy to check out any theory. However, I just tested all of your suggestions and everything is in working order.
I guess my question now should be "Where are the areas where sound could travel from the engine/CAI into the cabin on the driver's side?"
The shop assures me all of the grommets and such are sealed and in place. Is there a vent or something that could be open or stuck or are there any hidden grommets they may have just overlooked? (I'm just talking out loud hoping maybe my rambling will help spark the thought process of someone more knowledgeable than me.)
Found it! It wasn't coming from the vent at all...
It is indeed the engine noise traveling through the inside of the fender and through the driver's door into the cabin.
When replacing the blend door controller would they have had to remove any of the weatherstripping along the door or anything that would cause a gap in the door seal?

Have you fixed the problem? If so, how?

Unfortunately, not yet. I moved this past weekend so I didn't have time to take it back to the dealer and have them correct it, so I will have to wait and find a new shop up here.
Now that I know it's a relatively small issue I'll just have it fixed the next time I take it in for some warranty work or do it myself if I can figure it out.

Can you take a pic of what you are talking about?
To see if anything is missing compared to some one else car.
