I have always hated my shifter, so decided to do something about it, not as easy for an automatic as it should be since they are all ugly... plus the pesky shift lockout button :shifty:
Anywho, kinda made some stuff up in my mind that I thought might work, and go figure it came together pretty good. All I need is the button for the OD and to decide where I wanna secure the boot... Mainly whether I wanna stretch it over the shifter bezel like it is in the 05 stang, or just loose.
On to the pic

nah it'll be minimal at best. just gotta fit the boot to the bezel, and drill a hole in front of the cup holders for the new OD button. All in all it'll be a pretty simple operation

Curious, what knob and boot are these off of? And did the knob fit well? Looks like you click the top of it down to get out of park?

Do you want your automatic tranmission to look like a manual? Why?

That's off a newer Mustang, correct? Looks pretty good...
How do you get the old shifter off? I need to tighten mine a bit.

getting the old one off is pretty simple. you gota pull the gauge pod out, then i belive the whole cup holder assy comes out then you can see how it works. its been a whilesince i did mine.

Nice for an original idea, especially since most aftermarket shifters end up looking like crap with the O/D over switch. If you are looking for an OE Overdrive button my old 97 T-Bird had the O/D switch in the center console box.
I'd like to see if the auto shifter from the new Mustang would fit our cars.
Personally I'd like to see a 3 spoke steering wheel like the late 60's or early 70's to replace our wheels.

has nothing to do with looking like a manual, there are plenty of OEM autos with boots and shifters that don't look like a cave man club. Has to do with it not looking like poop. :D

The boot is from an 05 stang yes, I still need to remove the bezel from it and use the Marauder bezel to hold the boot.
If just the top of the shifter is wobbly, first try slipping down the little cover on the shaft on the shifter with a flat head screwdriver, It slips down very easily. After that you'll see two star screws that hold it in place.

I'll do it sometime in this next week, I'm waiting for the momentary switch that I'm gonna use for the OD button to come in the mail.

Is there a gear PRND indicator? That won't pass safety inspection in a lot of states if it doesn't have one

That's no concern in the great state of MI, no inspection here. ;) Most of the stuff done to my car won't pass inspection in other states.

Computer supply store, it's the kind of button you'd use as a PC power button or reset button.

it's momentary, like your power button on your laptop, so has only one position and changed to the next position, IE no on or off position per say, just like the oem button.
this is the one I'm getting:

That looks really slick.
Personally I'd prefer to keep the O/D button on the shifter somewhere, probably on top. I wouldn't mind a switch like a jet fighter joystick, kinda like arming the weapon for business time. :D

Very nice! I like it a lot. The factory shifter looks clunky and feels like a lump of cheap plastic. This looks good like it is. :o

How did you account for the reverse lockout?

If you look closely, the top of the knob is actually a button that pushes down on the rod for the lockout. PRND21 is also engraved in the top.

Your new knob makes it look like you put a manual trans in your car, which makes it look cool.

I really like this.
+1 to everyone who said they would like the O/D button on the shifter as opposed to in the console...
What is the total cost you have in this project?

I would do that in a heartbeat. Awesome job.
Please post parts list and instructions!
What kind of shift knob is it? Can you get a closer pic of the top of it with PRND21 engraved?

Dunno what the brand is, I've had it for quite a while on the back burner. I was gonna do a B&M ratchet instead, then went back the the do my own thing idea. I'm sure a google search of "billet shift knobs" will give proper results, I searched something to that effect to end up with this one.
