I was driving to work today and I had a cop tailing me for a long while. I see another cop up ahead and he pulls out behind me and they pull me over.
I'm like whatever, I wasn't speeding, saw the 1st cop pull up behind me at a red light so I did nothing wrong. Cop comes up to my window asks for my license and registration. I told him I haven't received it yet from when my bank did the paper work on the purchase. Dumb me doesn't have the bill of sale or anything from the purchase.
Asks me if it is my car and I say "I just bought it a couple weeks ago and had my old plate transferred". He tells me it my plate but not registered to anything and after running the VIN the car is registered in Texas.
I told him that is where I bought it from etc, etc. Well apparently he didn't believe me has me get out of the car pats me down, asks to search my car, and I say ok.
Sticks me in the back seat of his crusier for like 45 min looks in my car, talks to the other cop. They thought the car was stolen and I was riding around with my tag on it. They were going to tow my car and take me in.
I finally convince him to let me call my wife on my cell, I get the number for the loan officer at my bank. I call and she says the Capitol One (the old lienholder for the car) hasn't realeased the title so they haven't processed my tax, tag and title yet. I let her expalin this to the cop and she gives him all of the relevant info. He finally lets me go after grilling me some more and tells me to get a temp tag.
2 hours of my morning, had me sitting in the cruiser like I did something wrong, and just overall screwed up my day. Left work early and spent 2 hours with the idiots at the tax collectors office even after I stopped at my bank got copies of all the paperwork again to make it easy.
I understand they have jobs to do but don't understand why they ran my plate in the first place. Didn't drive erratic, wasn't speeding or anything. I think the first cop was just pissed he was driving an Impala.

Man I run tags all night. You never know what you might stumble on. Don't take it personal... He was probably pissed that he wasted all his time too.

I didn't but it been over 12 years since I've been in the back seat of a cruiser. Felt like a teenage punk all over again. Just didn't like people driving by slow staring at me like I was some thug in the back of the cop car.
Brought back a whole lot of bad memories.

yeah don't worry about it man, cops run plates constantly just a part of the deal. Sucks when something odd happens like that, but such is life, and least you didn't end up in the clink

Something about cops running plates just because rubs me way the wrong way, If you're going to invade my privacy, you ought to have a reason. And that reason ought to be better than "just in case something might turn up" You have every right to take that experience personally. I would too!

Police here in Prince William County,VA have a couple of the new tag reader systems mounted on cruisers. The system constantly runs plates as they drive along and they are compared with a database on the fly. If something "out of the ordinary" registers with respect to the plates, then they can make the stop. Seems that they have been picking up on lots of stolen vehicles lately.

Looks like Big Brother ofthe Commonwealth has a 'Secret Police Force' now.
I would have been annoyed at the amount of time it took but look at it this way, if my Marauder or any other cars were stolen, I'd be somewhat happy to know that they are checking tags. Can't fault them for that.
*Sidenote on the "big brother watching" comment, 2 policemen are in trouble for running a backround check on Obama, it was immediately noticed by the Secret Service. Guess the Prez is immune to such nonsense?*
I experienced a similar situation when I bought my son's Honda Del Sol in Annapolis, Maryland.
However, I did have a bill of sale, proof of insurance and the notarized title. Just no plates or tax receipt since I elected to register the car in Louisiana and pay the sales tax there. One has ten days to do this from date of sale. I photo copied the state law and had it with me in the package.
Also the bank has a temp sales tag provision for traveling, but since no one had ever asked for one they didn't have any in stock. But I got a letter from them.
It didn't take long before a Maryland highway patrol trooper, pulled us over not far the DC. Well we had all the documentation to show the trooper. He was satisfied and told us not to be surprised if other states or jurisdictions did the same.
Fortunately no one else did.
Remember this in the future, "The paperwork has to equal the weight of the driver before you take off". (Author unknown)

When I was on patrol we would run plates on every vehicle we saw.....Here in Texas we have a system that would tell us if you had insurance or not and that is enough to pull you over, not to mention if a warrant pops up, or something else worthy of being pulled over such as a plate not matching a vehicle is a big red flag. We found someone wanted for aggrivated robery that way. Here it is against the law to put the wrong plate on a vehicle and is subject to arrest for that. I understand you stated that you transferred your plate to the new vehicle, but there is always a temp tag issued to make sure the paper work is pushed thru. Here, the temp tag is good for 45 days. In the past when I purchased a vehicle from and individual I would go straight to the tax office or do the deal at the tax office just to be on the safe side, becuase they will usually catch a mistake in paper work right away.

Do you know how many rapists, murderers, kidnappers, child molesters, and car thieves have been caught by police running license plates "just in case something turns up"? Do you know how many shoplifters, bank thieves, cat burglars, and scam artists have been caught by on-site security cameras that have been installed "just in case something happens"?
That police officer was doing his *JOB*! Something you DEMAND he does. I hope your car never gets stolen, kids never kidnapped, or house broken into... Because, if you had your way, the only way a cop could *EVER* detain anyone is if they witnessed the crime in action themselves.

From your description of events it sounds to me like your vehicle was not properly registered at the time of the stop. You could have been pinched for a unregistered motor vehicle, but the officer elected not to do that. Everyone should be aware that the US Supreme Court has ruled that you have NO expectation of privacy in a motor vehicle. NYS has been using the roof mounted plate readers for a few years now. Revenue generation at its best...

On a public road with an I.D. of sorts for all to see = No privacy. Yeah definately sucks to get pulled for sumthin like this (and more to the point.... get treated like a guilty party) as a law abiding citizen, but I would rather the police in my community be somewhat proactive during seat time in a cruiser vs. just responding to calls (like they do here in Metro ATL).

No I didn't have my hat on backwards but I do currently have a chin strap beard and was listening to one of my Seether albums pretty load.
I was more pissed that my bank had not notified me that the Title had not been released. I have owned the car since 7/17 and it has been in my possession since 7/22. I got back from Chicago on the 26th I have been driving illegally since 27th. Just bad communication on the banks part. I wouldn't have been driving it without one had I known.
My bank does not issue temp tags on private party sales and had I known that they were still waiting on the title to be released I would have put one there myself. All it took was some paper work and a couple hours at the Tax Collectors office. Now I'm riding clean with no worries until next month, hopefully the title is released by then and I can put my regular tag back on. Looks like I may have to crack some head at Capitol One.
The cops were doing their job it was just the amount of time it took me, and the fact they put my in the squad car that ticked me off. Just didn't like being treated like I was a criminal.

I was told to sit in a FHP cruiser late one night. But it was a Mustang, so I got to sit up front since the backseat wasn't a backseat, more like a shelf that had stuff mounted on it. Funny story.

My other half took the Marauder to work one day when the Taurus wouldn't start and I was still sleeping. I have a type of Lojack that activate's when the car is moved without hitting a hidden switch first so to make a long story short half way to work 4 state Trooper's pull the car over on the highway and all have their gun's pointed at the car.
Had to go down to the police station to explain it all with a neighbor's car.
Now do you want to talk about bad day's? That was over a year ago and I still get **** from my other half about it when I even sugest taking the Marauder out LOL!!!

That ^^^^ is exactly how the law sees it as well.
Related Story: My son decided to drive my wife's Freestyle over to his house. Enroute he gets pulled over and tell's the officer that he doesn't have a clue what he did wrong. Driver's License and Registration. He and the wife go through the glove compartment looking for the registration ... none for the current year. Seems the wife forgot to renew her registration and the plates were 6 months overdue. Police wrote him a ticket because he was the driver even after my wife (in the passenger seat) said it was her fault. No matter -- he got the ticket anyway. Had to make a quick trip to DMV to get new plates (missed the deadline to renew the old ones by 90 days) and then to traffic court to show the judge that the problem was taken care of. Yep, it was HIS responsibility. :D

I have every right to take it personally! I can take pretty much whatever I want personally but it won't do anything good. It was my fault I didn't have the paper work with me, and that I hadn't followed up with the bank but how often does it take 3 weeks to release a title. Capitol One sucks obviously.
I was gone for a week, had already paid tax, tag, and title to my bank. I would think they would let me know if it wasn't filed yet since I bought the car to drive it. I had insurance but none of the sale paper work, ie no proof of ownership. You would think that if they couldn't file the paper work they would notify you in case something would happen. It after all is their investment on loan to me until I pay the owed amount.
They were doing their jobs but I thought sticking me in the patrol car was a little much. I was cooperating, "Yes Sir, No Sir", willingly let them search the car. No reason for it really. I haven't been in trouble since I was 18, and that wasn't even here in Florida. I'm 30, a grown man, in my button down shirt, slacks, and Kenneth Cole's heading to work.
If I was being belligerent, talking back, or other wise uncooperative I can understand it. But I wasn't and they should have just had me step to the side. No reason to slap me in the back seat, which is probably the reason he didn't give me a ticket.

In putting you in the back seat did they handcuff you? I've put people in the back of my squad while I investigate something that does not check out right. Its somewhat of a safety thing and a command and control thing. If they let you stand outside the vehicle by the side of the road you could get hit by a car or go nuts and do something stupid. There's the chance of you walking away or attempting to run. Any number of things could happen. At least in the car he knows where your at.
Peoples appearance mean nothing. I've met real a$$hats that were dressed nice and appeared like normal people, and I've met genuine good people dressed like thugs.
I think the bottom line is this, everyone demands that the police do their job and enforce the law until they get the law enforced against them. THen they have to nitpick what the officer does while enforcing said laws. This is the way I tell people, "Hey you got a family you want to go home to right? I don't know you and you don't know me. I have a family to go home to. So if that means until I get things straight you get put in handcuffs and set in the backseat or on the ground, so be it. If at the end of the event that brought you to my attention you get released, I'll shake your hand and let you roll out. If not, well then I'll take those handcuffs off when we get to the station."

LOL Right-wing... as if.
I voted for Obama. I am gay, and would love to get married some day. Your credit report gets run only when you apply for something that requires credit (and insurance in some places). But, you're so far left-wing in your argument that it's scary. Your logic there states that the ONLY WAY an officer of the law can make an arrest is if they see the criminal in the act. This means that rapists that wear condoms (no evidence!), bank robbers that wear masks/gloves/etc (no evidence), and car thieves that leave the state can't be arrested.
I believe that our country, the United Socialist States of America HAS gone too far as of late, but I still believe that it could be worse, and that the officer in question here was doing the job that we demand he do.
Let's flip this situation here.
-- You JUST bought a Marauder, so the title/registration information is in limbo... some ******* steals your car, puts bogus tags on it, and goes on his merry way... Some cop pulls up behind this CAR THIEF, and, since he's not allowed (remember, this is your world here) to run the license plate "Because it's a violation of my basic liberties" the guy drives off into the sunset with YOUR 20,000 dollar car. --
This sounds like an ideal situation to me. What's your address?
Don't call me right-winged because I believe that police officers doing their jobs is a good thing. I've been arrested before, I've been in the back of a police car... And, you know what? I was in the wrong... Do you know what I did when it was all said and done? I thanked the officer that arrested me. BECAUSE HE WAS DOING HIS DAMNED JOB! THE JOB WE PAY HIM TO AND DEMAND HE DO!
The only part of your tirade here that makes any sense is the last one. You are correct he should have had his paperwork in order and he admits he should have.

Basically all I did was post this to vent some steam and not start a political forum. The cops did their job because my paper work was not in order. Yes the cop had every right to stick me in the cruiser even though it was not really necessary, but I understand the logic behind officer safety and wanting to keep me isolated. I had pulled off the road into a subdivision entrance so that he wouldn't be at risk when he was on the side of my car getting the info/writing a citation etc....
Benwin I hope you can get married someday but you are in left field with some of your logic. I have never thanked an officer for arresting me and I never will. Yes I was at fault when I was younger and got arrested but at the same time they beat me down with phone books and on more than 1 occasion. Was it deserved at the time, yes it probably was. Was it right? NO!!!!!
Unfortunatly I messed with the wrong cops and they let me know it in an unconventional way that I don't think is in the standard police procedure book. Did it teach me a lesson yes, crime hurts, and I'm not talking about the 18 months I spent in Bridgewater State or the 2 years I was on parole. Did I still get in trouble after that, little stuff but I learned my lesson, I paid my dues to society but to this day I am still not allowed to vote in Florida because I was convicted of a felony over 10 years ago in a different state.
There are all types of cops and I personally think the cop who had pulled me over thought he had his first hot collar of the day. He was some young gun ho newbie who probably pulls over anyone with a little bling and a little bass. When he realized that it was my actually my car his stiffy started deflating and he decided it was good time to dig for more crap and search my car. I happily obliged because I didn't want him to get a warrant and screw up my car, plus i had nothing to hide (I had already dropped the kilos off). When nothing came up he finally let me go only after his superior talked him down. Unfortunatly he wasted 2 hours of my day and 2 hours of his when he should have been out doing the job we pay him for. It would have been better for me and for him had he written me a citation sent me on my way and got back to patroling. It would have gotten the department some revenue from my ticket, I could have made it to work at a reasonable time, and I probably wouldn't have been pissed about being in the backseat of a crusier for an hour for what I feel was a BS reason and some cop pulling at straws trying to find something.
I understand random plate checks and understand why they are usefull but where will it stop. When we are living like the story Fahrenheit 454?
This country was started on individual rights, that is why the original settlers came here, but everyday we are removing more and more of these rights early settlers fought for. Cameras on the street corner that will take my picture if I take a right on red and automatically issue me a ticket (saw this in Chicago a few weeks ago), the government telling you who and who can't get married (whats the matter with just having a civil union Benwin? I don't agree but get my point), when will we have a 1 baby law like China, or will you have to pay for a baby making permit? Next you will tell me that Bush was right about phone tapping and you think Cheney would be a great hunting buddy. Why do we need cops? If the government just shoved a camera and a GPS up everyone's rears then they could monitor us 24/7 and they could catch us as soon as we did someting wrong.
Next thing you know they will have a machine that will predict when I am going to do something wrong and arrest me for future intent to commit a crime (wait I saw a crappy movie with a lame actor about this).
There is a fine line between being proactive and BS police work. Personally I think they should let cops beat people down like they did back in the day. I knew when I got in trouble back in my home town, if I got caught I was getting stomped by 4-6 cops who always did it with a smile. Guess what I stopped getting in trouble, but should they have the right to monitor every aspect of my life NO!!!
That is why this country was founded on individual freedoms, if you want to be a catholic, jewish, muslim, whatever you can. If you want to marry a man, a woman, whoever go ahead. But when you want to peek your head into my life and start invading my privacy just in case I might be doing something the government doesn't like then no you are wrong.
All in all he did his job, I got my papers straight because of it, it was a huge hassle, but let me know I wasn't completely legal yet. I just wanted to complain a little, and share my misery for the day with everyone here and not start a pissing match about personal freedom or the man invading my privacy. There are reason the government needs to keep an eye on us, but we are also the ones who pay their wages. When you see someone who obviously is well meaning and isn't trying to intentionally do something wrong cut them some slack, don't bust their balls and make them feel like crap. Remember "He who is without sin may cast the first stone"
I'm officially done with this thread, you guys can keep going if you want. Thanks everyone.

I think you mean Fahrenheit 451. That's 451*F, the temperature at which paper burns. That story was about burning books and firemen who actually started fires to burn the books rather than put it out. Not sure exactly how you made the connection to this incident of license plate checks. ;)

And now for something completely different, we need a thread about boobies:

Well at least you posted up a nice pair. :o
If you were a male booby, Ray .... I suspect that you would be chasing anything with turquoise feet.
BTW -- I recently saw a National Geographic video of the Gallapagos Islands with those suckers coming in for landings. They use those blue-green feet as air brakes. Works great !!!

Not a response to to license plate checks but to other peoples ramblings. Haven't read Fahrenheit 451 in about 10 years (when I was in the clink). But it was actually about a future where free thought was not allowed that is why books were banned and your house would be burned down if you were caught reading them. Basically if you did not agree with the masses the firemen would come and get you.
I was actually thinking about Anthem by Ayn Rand, but was in the middle of a tirade once I saw where this thread had gone. 2 things I don't talk about with people I like religion and politics. That is why I have never interjected into some of the threads I have seen here. People have different opinions they are passionate about and usually those conversations do not end well when parties disagree.
I agree more conversations about boobies, interesting birds my favorite is the red footed booby, but will settle for a a pair of browns if my wife would let me every once in awhile.

honestly, the idea that they can check my info at any time doesn't really bother me too much...in an ideal world.
problem comes up in my mind when I see the people behind the monitors most of the time. As was brought up earlier, too often the constant "protection" is more about the revenue source than the well-being of the public which the departments are supposed to serve. It's pretty bad out here in the smaller towns in and around San Antonio.

Do you think that this ^^^^ plus the license plate snafu had anything to do with the 2 hour stay in the back seat of the cruiser? Seems probable to me.

No I do not, I think it was the plate not being correct and some young green cop thought he was onto something or would make it into something. Young cop trying to make a name, likes to bust balls, and will learn in a year or 2 what battles to fight. Like I said he wanted to arrest me even after talking to the loan officer and understanding the situation at hand. It wasn't until his superior who was there stepped in and said enough is enough. Just a rookie who is young, dumb, and has his hand always on his gun. If he was more experienced he would have cited me, sent me on my way, and not dragged it out for 2 hours. Once the superior officer stepped in and realized what was going on I was let go without even a ticket. At least if he had been smart and not looking for more than what the situation actually was he would at least have gotten one more ticket off his quota for the month.
I was never arrested in the state of Florida and like I said before it was over 10 years ago. My record is not available anymore and could not be accessed by a simple traffic stop. I did some stupid crap when I was 18, I'm 30 now, get over it people make mistakes and grow up. Just cause I was arrested when I was younger doesn't mean anything now.
I was being sarcastic when I made that comment about reading it in the clink. I read both books in Socialology when I was getting my Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering a couple years after I got out of the clink.
Maybe you should take a read of both books I mentioned. You would understand that the 451 story was not just about burning books but more about what American society is morphing into on a daily basis. We can't say what we feel since it may hurt other peoples feelings, you have cameras in Metropolitan areas that automatically scan your face and try to match it to a nation wide database to see if you are someone Big Brother is looking for, cameras take your pictures if you run through a red light at 2 in the morning and send you a ticket automatically to your home, you get pat down before going into sporting events like you are getting ready to board a plane, you have employers running your credit before they will hire you, continues brainless mush on TV that is dumbing down the future of our society, we are years behind most of the other major nations in our education system prior to the collegiate level, they are talking about wanting to put medical record chips in people, rant, rant, rant, rant..... I could go on for days.
It wasn't the book I was meaning to talk about but it definitely has a deeper meaning than just burning books for kindling. Both books I mentioned are about futures where if you step outside the norm (what the ruling powers deem is the best for you) you are considered to be different and therefore a threat to society.

He finally lets me go after grilling me some more and tells me to get a temp tag... I know you're upset and feel the need to vent. I'm not going after you, but at least he gave you an opportunity to make a courtesy call and a chance to straighten out your mess up. I don't know many Coppers in Chicago, rookie or old timer that would give you the time or day to even explain yourself. I could see my MARAUDER being towed and soon after being told... "Tell it to the Judge". Take it as a positive experience and move on.

Evidently, this may have led to your obvious negative attitude towards law enforcement and the inability to willingly play by the rules... by complaining about your detention and failing to verify the proper registration of your motor vehicle, then passing the blame. I feel there's more to the "bank error" story that you're not mentioning -- it lacks credibility. :shake:

That has nothing to do with it and hasn't been part of my life in years. There was a classy way to handle it (the way his superior did) and not to bust my balls for 2 hours. If they had written me a ticket and towed the car I would have understood and accepted it. I probably still would have complained about it either way. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
As Hacklemerc explained they put me in the car for theirs and my own safety but it doesn’t mean I have to like it. If the officer had approached me in this manner I probably would not have been insulted as I was. But he was rude and treated me like I was doing something horribly wrong. If he had said I would like you to get in the cruiser for yours and my own safety while I check your vehicle (which was still unnecessary in my eyes) explaining why I probably would have been okay with the situation. If you act like a classless jerk I will call you a classless jerk, if you approach me like a stand up person, I will show you the same respect. When I am there saying yes sir, no sir and not trying to skirt the situation there was no reason for him to be a jerk about it and bust my balls. You get more flies with honey than with vinegar and just like most other jobs where interaction with other people is necessary a little tact could have been used on his part. His superior approached me and spoke to me in a respectable manner according to the way I spoke to him, again a more experienced and tactful officer. Some things you don’t learn in the academy and that is people skills. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Again my tirade was not about law enforcement as I have met and befriended police officers; but about people’s interjections turning this into a political debut about the situation (again read the whole thread before you comment) along with the classless (the way I feel, my opinion that I am entitled to. Yes this is part of the constitution and is a right not a privilege like driving a car) way the 1st officer handled the situation.
You can take it however you want to, but I stick to the fact that the seller’s bank hadn't released the title and that was the reason the car wasn't properly registered. I should have followed up as I said in previous posts (go back and read the whole thread and don’t just pick out the parts you don’t like). I'll state again that the cop was doing his job but there are all types of cops just like any other profession. Some like to bust balls, some like to beat you with phone books, and some would have handled it differently once the whole situation was known. <o:p></o:p>
Again when I pay the bank for the services (tax, tag, and title, and yes that included transferring my old tag), I would expect that the bank would do their due diligence in making sure that they have the title to the vehicle they currently own. It is their investment I am driving until it is paid off and would have assumed they would let me know if there were difficulties with getting the title. They were quick to let me know when the seller hadn’t reached the pay off amount that was equal to my buying price. When it was the banks money on the line they were quick to call and point out a bad situation. I didn’t buy the car to let it sit in my drive way but to drive it and having paid to transfer my old tag I assumed (again my fault for assuming anything). Again as I stated before (read the whole thread) I should have followed up but didn’t and that is why this situation happened.

Sorry for derailing the topic... I figured we needed something to lighten the mood...

The tags were just carry over from the form I was using on my desktop. I was typing on my desktop and copy and pasted my reply once it was complete. It wasn't until I submitted it and saw the tags that I realized it had been carried over.
Not a problem, don't sweat it:beer:. Sometimes it is good to discuss these thing but these types of discussions generally never end up in a good light. You know the saying about peoples :censor: and opinions..... Everyone has one and I just happen to be one most of the time. Thank god we are actually able to express them.
I can easily get going sometimes, and be pulled into rant mode fairly quickly:banghead:. Again this is why I don't discuss politics and religion with people I like such as members in this online community.
No offense taken and none was meant to anyone. Just voicing my opinion and thoughts to other peoples opinion and thoughts on my story. :grouphug:
CBT
We still luv ya, this obviously meant a lot to you. Better to vent here and let us help by making fun of you than let it build up. Stress can take it's toll on the bod.

^^^^^^^^^^^Cougar, from what you've said, you sound like a pretty reasonable, responsible guy to me. Definately no lack of respect for law enforcement coming through. I commend you on your composure under fire and can say I might not have been so understanding. I'm a rebel at heart I guess. Don't tread on me......or you'll hear about it.;) BTW It's not necessary for anyone to point out the error of my ways. My husband has given up after 12 years!:D And I like donuts once in a while Casey. Especially applecider donuts up in Vermont in the Fall!

That has nothing to do with it and hasn't been part of my life in years. There was a classy way to handle it (the way his superior did) and not to bust my balls for 2 hours. If they had written me a ticket and towed the car I would have understood and accepted it. I probably still would have complained about it either way. <o:p></o:p>
I understand and I apologize for misjudging you... I was having a rough morning... :o

CBT I love me some Krispy Kremes, nothing like first thing in the morning when the fresh doughnut light goes on. oooohhhh 16791
Thanks MS Denmark. I had to learn the hard way early in life. Thankfully I did because some of my oldest friends never have and it is sad to see the state of their lives today. I learned long ago to keep myself and my mouth in check when dealing with the law and to treat them with the respect they deserve. 99% of the time if you let them do thier job, and are polite they won't bust your balls.
W4LTD, no issues here. I was already on my soap box and can be spun up real easy anyways. I take no offense and at the next SSM meet we will sit down have a beer or soda and a Cigar on me.

One of the best things about Fall in New England. You can get them elsewhere but just like Maple syrup they are the best when from Vermont.
