View Full Version : Engine died......

MMM2003

.... on my drive home. Had just picked it up from the shop to have a mysterious A/C leak diagnosed and fixed. Hoping it's "just" some electrical problem and no major damage.

Engine still seemed to turn over, but wouldn't run. "Check Engine" light is on right away. Waiting to hear back on error codes and initial diagnosis.

It's been 170,000+ miles of fun and (hopefully) counting. Wouldn't know what to replace it with.

Anyway, haven't posted for a long time, but been browsing a lot to keep her going over the years.

Thanks,

Peter aka MMM2003

Thanks for the feedback and replies so far. Anxiously awaiting to hear from the shop.

bcastro - what's the difference between:

Ford Racing Aluminator NA Longblock 10.1cr $5200
Ford Racing Aluminator SC Longblock 8.5:1cr $6100

Does the SC version have upgraded internals to handle the SC pressure?

Thanks,

Peter

They are both fully forged motors in Al blocks, same heads. The 8.5:1 is the Cobra replacement and has the cobra front cover, the 10.5:1 has Mach front cover. Both can be supercharged.

Plug the Crank Position sensor back in, prolly got knocked loose when they were working under there.
Ive also seen the wires seperate froom the actual connector when people are not careful.
Good luck!

Fuel pump?

And the winner is........ RoyLPita!

Diagnosed the fuel pump failed. Inconsistent pressure. 0-32 (mostly 0). Getting a new one installed by my shop.

Just another $775 to keep her rolling. I know it's high, but what am I going to do? Can't drive it as is and I need it fixed quickly. Rental car is getting expensive.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback. As always, it is greatly appreciated!

What a great site and membership!!

Keep the Marauder. Soon, cars like the Marauder are going into the past. Our government is forcing us to more fuel efficient vehicles. I would replace the engine and put another 170,000 miles on the beast..

I say that much after 100,000 miles the Panther platform can become a money pit. I recommend losing sentimental attachment and realize that the vehicle is very replaceable...a most common platform. It is economically maintained and obtained.

At 170,000 miles, you can expect electronics, computers, power motors, and virtually all moving parts to need replacement.

I don't know where your information comes from but just look around NY City and there are hundreds of Panther platform cabs running around with 300++K miles on them....ALL city driven!!

Around Atlanta they figger they are about worn out at 500K miles!!

My Marauder has 202,6xx miles on it with 118K miles of this with the ProCharger and I have to say it is simply the best car I've ever owned!!:bows: I've had 6 CV's and went over 200K miles on two of them....!!:bows:

My car may BLOW UP tomorrow but I could never call it a "Money Pit"!!:shake:

My last crown vic was still cruising at 285k miles, and the only things that didnt work, were the drivers side power seat and the little clock on the dash. And I beat the snot out of that car till the day I sold it to get my marauder.

Well I guess it is all relative...I didn't mean driveable, I meant
being reasonably close to new condition and comfort.

I take ridiculous care of my vehicles...synthetic everything...garaged...over maintained...never a rust spot except for a rusted out gas tank on a 2003 Grand Marquis. Trust me when I
say after 120,000 miles it is time to go. It is just not worth the
expense and reliability decline that comes from an aging platform when others are around to buy like new that would save you thousands in repair bills.

Must be a New York thing with winter, snow and salt......I live on the coast on the salt water and my car will be 6 years old in November...NO RUST and of course it ain't new but a 9 out of 10......same with all my CV's......:D

All I'm saying to you is you cannot make blanket statements like you did since there are so many variables.......THESE ARE GREAT CARS!!:bows: (At least mine is!!);)

Actual wholesale price "well" part plus 10% is 276.00 that is with tax. BTW, that is the whole fuel pump assembly which they will be putting in your car. So don't feel too bad.

Thanks for the info. I do trust the guy in this shop. I replace what I can myself, but things like this I rather have done. And yes, that was the whole assembly, including wiring harness, etc....

Well, I have already replaced several none critical components. I figure, if I have to replace a few more parts (like the A/C which just died), I'm still better off "investing" into my fully paid-off vehicle, with no rust and fresh paint, over a monthly payment on a new vehicle or used car with no known history.

Anyway, thanks for your input and PMs, but I'll stick with my MM.

Thanks,

Peter

Do you have to change anything tune wise when using SVT pump?

Do you have to change anything tune wise when using SVT pump?

Not really, I went from a stock pump to a GT500 pump, and all it did was go through more fuel, but it sure did have it when it needed it.

Peter, nice to hear from you, albeit under such circumstance, and isn't hindsight a wonderful thing? There you are with a vehicle, dead on the road, needing a tow. They came and got it, supplied you with a rental, and fixed it. The very same thing happened to me, earlier this summer, with the cost being about the same; although, in my case it was 125K on the clock. Look at it this way: $775 to get it towed/fixed = ~1/2 cent a mile. I agree with you that you're money ahead to keep 'em on the road.

When you hear horrible noises, and see bodily fluids on the ground and a rod protruding through the block.....that's another story

all the best.....mike
