I really thought these little buggers had more power? I have yet to run one................untill tonight:D. Coming home from the movies at 1am we played the whole speed up/slow down routine, finally stopped at a light, I told him my friend had one and they are a cool little car. Light turned green, get her up to 5mph or so and BAM! Loud pedal nailed to the floor:eek:, and much to my surprise I SMOKED the little blue bug! Over the sound of my Blower and Exhaust I hear his wastegate??? blowing after every gear and at 50mph it just became a joke and a waste of fuel. It was a spankin in da makin! :beatnik: He had nice exhaust, real pretty lights on the pillar that matched his paint, and alllll kinds of neon lights inside???? The interior was quite pretty, if your into that kinda thing...... I woulda thought with the exhaust and what not he would've been a challenge and I was waiting for an even run? My car probably sounded like a WAR to him as I pulled and pulled away :). And then my black sleeper four door disapeared into the night to sleep in the garage and rest up for another day.

was it even an STI?

The powertrain is identical between a regular WRX and an STi package if I'm not mistaken, the only major difference I know of is the STi has a user-controllable variable center differential to adjust the front and rear torque distribution balance for the all-wheel drive. Of course, there are some cosmetic differences, but that one is the most major performance difference I know of.

the other thing is, what year was it...
I mean they are all pretty slow from the factory compared to the evo

WRX do not have any power if you catch them under 3K - total dog - I know I leased one for 3 years... (not the STi) It takes great feet and throttle control to launch them just right.
0-60 is suppose to be 5.4 seconds for a regular WRX, very few drivers can actually pull that off. Next time try him from a dead stop. WRX needs to dump the clutch when the revs are at about 5K - then it'll be more of a challenge.
I beat a STI with "stickers" on it in my old P71 - hammer went down hard at about 25mph. I took (and kept) him at 6-7 lenghts till around 90 when I let off.
Again most people cannot drive them - I've seen a plain jane WRX do the 1/4 at our local drags at 16.xx - pretty pathetic

Therein lies the best and worst part of the AWD platform, you can launch at high rpm and get traction to rocket off the line, but then do it a few too many times and you're gonna be replacing that transmission/transfer casing quite often...
Unless I'm going rally racing, I honestly can't find much in AWD that I couldn't do just as well more reliably in a RWD.

Yes, it was an STi, and yes he did have an awefull slow take off similiar to a bog. Looked really clean, but was definately an older box model. I can't wait till I go manual and have me some fun slammin gears again!

I am a little surprised too. I would have thought he would have given you a good run for your money. Way to go and show him what the big ol Mercury can do though.

The STi is a lot more powerful than the WRX

ahh, my mistake. Only pushes the point home harder though how much better his Marauder is than that Subaru. :P

Indeed, the mis information above is pretty staggering.
up until recently the US wrx had a good 80hp less (don't care enough to look up the recent numbers), not to mention a bigger/better turbo, better suspension, brakes on and on and on and on. And yes you have to beat em for them to go fast, I've seen a "stage 2" STi run a 13.7 for goodness sake, unless you drop the hell out of the clutch, you aren't going anywhere

I have an 06 STI. Stock #'s are 300 hp/300 tq. Under 3000 rpm they do have the turbo lag. There are many things that set the STI apart from a WRX. The STI is a little hot rod. With just a few quick mods I have run low 13's. You have to know how to run the clutch. The STI is made to corner and also look at the size of the Brembos. I do know that a lot people that drive them are real pieces of work. Don't make fun that I have one.

I actually like them. There's 2 in my hood, a silver one and an awesome color of blue one with gold rims and a big rectangular wing. It's looks all factory. I would drive it.

I would drive one as well. The AWD drivetrain does weight a ton, if I remember correctly they only weigh a couple hundred pounds less than the Marauder. I'm feeling too lazy to actually look that up, though.

I stand corrected. A guy I worked with had one and he said his weighed 3800. I usually have a policy of listening to what "THEY say" and this is just one more reason for me not to ;).

He may have been trying to sand bag a little, or maybe he meant with him in it

I would never make fun of you owning one. :beer:Infact i'd like to get one as a commuter. I kinda like the blue with gold, but it must be the older boxier version, I don't care for the looks of the new one's.

I agree...the new ones like a lil homo station wagon. I like the sedan style myself. If Im going to drive a station wagon its going to be that Twin Turbo V-10 AWD Audi.

So I was wrong......but I was right......Get this, I was just at the local Jiffy Lube getting the oil changed in the Escort and what did I see sitting in the back lot??? A blue wrx that looked quite familiar. LOL. I asked the guy who took my keys whose it was and he replied "thats Georges" and he pointed at the counter.
I go up to George and said "Hey, you look kinda familiar and so does that little blue car out back." He looks at me for a second or three and I could almost see the eyes crossing and the drool starting so I interupted the tard within before it came out (we all do that once in awile, I figured that I'd spare him hehe). I said, "Sunday 1 AM, black four door" He said OMG! Yeah, whats up!
We chit chatted for a minute about the cars, it turns out it is a WRX that has been under the knife. He has converted everything over from an STI except the brakes so far. It started like most of us, new engine, then blew the stock trans, new trans, then chewed up the turbo, upgraded turbo, and can't stop now!! He was cool, seemed to know those cars quite well. Young guy with a mission, kinda reminds me of me and my Camaros back in the day......

Thank you, but there is a good chance that either he isn't used to the new clutch and trans or it hasn't been tuned right. He didn't give any sob stories? Like I said decent guy. I think i'll go back soon and see if he wants to hang out with some Ford friends of mine. "It's best to know your enemies." LOL. A couple beers and laughs, bench racing, its all good around here.
